See all 2 images. At ninety, Jimmy Carter reflects on his public and private life with a frankness that is disarming. He adds detail and emotion about his youth in rural Georgia that he described in his magnificent An Hour Before Daylight. He writes about racism and the isolation of the Carters. He describes the brutality of the hazing regimen at Annapolis, and how he nearly lost his life twice serving on submarines and his amazing interview with Admiral Rickover. He admits that he decided to quit the Navy and later enter politics without consulting his wife, Rosalynn, and how appalled he is in retrospect.

He discusses his regret at losing his re-election, but how he and Rosalynn pushed on and made a new life and second and third rewarding careers. He is frank about the presidents who have succeeded him, world leaders, and his passions for the causes he cares most about, particularly the condition of women and the deprived people of the developing world. Jimmy Carter has lived one of our great American lives—from rural obscurity to world fame, universal respect, and contentment. Your Cart items Cart total. Buy from another retailer. A primer for the generations who don't know his work and a personal retelling for those who do, A Full Life may herald the reappraisal he deserves. The author takes the reader on an engaging personal journey through the later half of the 20th century, as he saw it.

As I write this, he is working on building houses I'm not going to review Carter's presidency, nor even the book really, just comment on the remarkable man I learned about in A Full Life. President Carter is an intelligent, thoughtful, and honest man, and I wonder if he may not have been considered a great president because he told the truth. He has made his life remarkable, and continues to do so even as he has aged. I couldn't help but be struck and saddened by the differences between President Carter and our current president.

I look back on those four years with peace and satisfaction, knowing that I did my best and had some notable accomplishments. Vice President Mondale summarized our administration by saying, "We told the truth, we obeyed the law, we kept the peace.

We need to be a Superpower as a champion of peace, not war; we need to be a Superpower in being a champion of basic human rights, although we're now violating a good many of the basic principles of human rights. We need to be the most generous country in the world; the most dedicated to the essence of democracy and freedom. I think that we should be a champion of peace, and a champion of human rights, and a champion of democracy, and a champion of freedom, a champion of generosity, a champion of environmental quality.

He is quite a character! This book illustrates a man who found enjoyment in everything he did, and always strove to improve the lives of others, while leading a rather humble lifestyle himself. One might say he actually "walked the walk and talked the talk". Jul 24, Jim Bowen rated it liked it Shelves: Ummm, no I'm sorry, but this book, isn't for me, despite me being a solid life long Democrat, even if I'm one with a bit of a Libertarian streak.

You know how when you read academic documents, they often start with an abstract, that acts as a synopsis for the article that follows? That's probably the best way to describe this book. It acts as a synopsis of Carter's life, but doesn't have the following article that follows. For that, you'd need to hunt through the other books Carter has written, a Ummm, no I'm sorry, but this book, isn't for me, despite me being a solid life long Democrat, even if I'm one with a bit of a Libertarian streak.

For that, you'd need to hunt through the other books Carter has written, and that's my biggest problem with this book. I shouldn't have to hunt this hard to have the follow-up. Don't get me wrong, it covers his life, it's just a bit of a breezy overview. An other grumble relates to the old Garrison Keillor's description of Lake Wobegon all the women are strong, men good looking, and children above average.

That could almost be used to describe Carter's life. Given the work he's done ending conflicts, I have difficulty squaring his rose tinted spectacles with what he must have seen in his life, and that lessens the book for me. My other grumble is how he sees other people. He sort of sets himself up as the "Great I Am", but derides other people.

So all in all, my instinct is "Ummm, no", but if you want a brief and breezy overview of Carter's life, you might like it. Jul 09, John rated it really liked it. A mini memoir of President Carter's life and a quick read. The second presidential memoir I've read finished 41 last year written about Bush Sr. It started off well, but I felt in the end, he was writing about why things didn't work out and describing what things he did did work out. However, his underlying Christian grace and his continual attempts to grow as a human are wonderful examples which can and should be followed, I think. When a person passes away, we do not remember the job that they did, but rather, we remember the person that they were. In the same way, I enjoyed reading about the man who was the 39th president, but who has done so much since he finished in the White House. Aug 20, Samantha rated it it was amazing Shelves: This was everything I wanted it to be.

Carter has written many books, most on specific beliefs, issues he faced during his presidency etc, but in this book readers get a broad survey of his life. I think any reader interested in presidents, history, or the man himself will want to start here instead of with any of his earlier books.

The text isn't weighed down by public service jargon so This was everything I wanted it to be. It is impressive to hear him discuss the goals he set and the paths he chose to attain his dreams for himself, his family, and the nation.

In his later years he has turned much of his energy toward improving human rights and living standards around the world. I admire the fact that he held to his beliefs and principles even when compromise might have improved his opportunities for success. Dec 04, Jim rated it liked it Shelves: Always had a soft spot for Carter and felt he did what he could as president, and I still feel he has been our best ex-president, especially in continuing his fight for peace and humanity. I haven't read his earlier memoirs, but this book has the feel of an anecdotal overview, which isn't bad.

He seems to touch on subjects honestly. I was most interested in his naval career, since my father followed a similar path, though never on nuke subs. There were many small details I found interesting. There were no "reflections".

If you believe that…..

I was very disappointed. Summer Bingo - Memoir of a US political figure. I would certainly give five stars to the person that Carter is - his optimism, intelligence, integrity and basic decency are sadly lacking from today's political landscape. I was too young to vote for him I missed the election by a few weeks , or to know much first hand about the issues he faced.

And I was surprised and also saddened, given today's politics by how bipartisan Washington was back then.

Carter had a bold agenda and managed to accomplish much of it. The book was a little choppy and I debated about four vs five stars, but ultimately decided it really doesn't matter. So - five stars! I really enjoyed listening to him tell his story, but think I'd recommend the book, because it includes photographs and paintings by him!

Three quotations sum up nicely what I loved about the book - and the man: From the Introduction, talking about his four years as President: From his inaugural address as Georgia's governor: No poor, rural, weak, or black person should ever again have to bear the additional burden of being deprived of the opportunity of an education, a job, or simple justice. And finally, from a section titled "A Future America", on the second to last page: When people in other nations face a challenge or a problem, it would be good to have them look to Washington for assistance or as a sterling example.

Our government should be known to be opposed to war, dedicated to the resolution of disputes by peaceful means, and, whenever possible, eager to accomplish this goal. We should be seen as the unswerving champions of human rights, both among our own citizens and within the global community.

America should be the focal point around which other nations can rally against threats to the quality of our common environment. We should be willing to lead by example in sharing our great wealth with those in need. Our own society should provide equal opportunity for all citizens and assure that they are provided the basic necessities of life.

This USA president is an inspiration for everyone who wants to accomplish goals in life but fears failure.

Jimmy Carter apparently has never given failure much consideration. In roles as son, husband, father, navel submariner, peanut farmer, governor of a state and president of a country, he jumps in and just keeps moving forward. That is my main take-away from the memoir. It isn't important to agree with the man's politics something in the book caused me to withhold one star, maybe unfairly to benefit from his ability to accomplish whatever he sets his mind to, or am least to learn from his mistakes and keep going. When a ninety year old man is still building houses for the needy, only taking a quick hospital break for dehydration, this is a strong lesson in leading by example.
