It's a fascinating tale with a huge cast of characters, all well-drawn and distinct in the author's hands. Enjoy the elegantly told tale with some elegant four-star coffee. Minnette Meador's recently re-released Centurion and the Queen goes back even further to Roman Britain, blending history, action and romance in a tale with satisfying conviction and depth.

Another one to enjoy with elegant four-star coffee. Rosie Archer's WWII romances bring to life the world of England's women at war, balancing tragedy, cruelty, kindness and generosity with well-researched history. I've read three so far: The Munitions Girls which reveals how women home lives and work lives were lived under threat of explosion and loss; The Gunpowder and Glory Girls where life is lived on both sides of legality plus hints of 60s gangsters in the making ; and the Ferry Girls which explores how people of German descent were mistreated.

All the novels blend abuse, healing, guilt and forgiveness and I'm looking forward to more. Enjoy some more elegant four-star coffees with these. Finally, there's the latest No 1 Ladies Detective Agency novel, which isn't historical but does include a character who frequently muses on how the world has changed. I love the sense of time, times, place and places in these books, and The House of Unexpected Sisters is no exception.

Another one to enjoy with an elegant got to be elegant four-star coffee. Post a Comment. Popular posts from this blog February 06, Read more. February 23, Today I'm delighted to welcome Daniel Dark to my blog. He's the author of Knife's Tell and Victorian Catsup yes, catsup!

Are you afraid yet? Afraid to read his books? The explanation for that, however, is a bit more extensive. With all the different cons and such happening through the year, only a few were geared toward those in the GBLT romance genre. Not surprising since this genre is still up and coming. It has made great strides, but sadly, still not as popular as the het romances as far as being mainstream goes.

The books are still getting out there and the authors are still writing them. Unfortunately, these cons can only allow so many authors to attend. Then there is the price of registration. Flights, hotels, and other miscellany are added as well. All totaled up, attending one of these events can set an author back thousands.

And for a newbie or even a mid-author, sometimes that price is just too much to pay. The pubs, editors, cover artists, photographers, reviewers, readers, and fans? What about them? So far, these events are for the pubs, authors, fans, and readers. But what if there was an event that could encompass everyone involved in the writing process? That could bring all these people under one roof to talk, meet, promo, and sell their work? That question had plagued Deborah and I for many months. Both of us had attended events, but none were geared for everyone. Then the wonderful guys at Bent-con invited us to share our media with their media in a conflagration of GBLT fireworks.

Both of us jumped at the chance. What better place to have everyone involved in the writing process sharing knowledge, disparate experience, and their wares to those who will appreciate it. Minnette Meador author of The Centu Shanon Grey author of The Shopp Wendy L.

Unless, of course, you wish to explain why you are so interested in the Pilgrim's Paradise, and speak in your sleep like the Queen. Even so, men gave little regard to women's chores, offering a third or fourth less wages for domestic help compared to a man's wages for agricultural labor. The majority of Americans clothed themselves in homemade woolens, linen, and "towcloth" made from flax.

Daughters often took the task of spinning, and unmarried women of the household, hence the term 'spinster'. Once the thread was ready, it was usually taken to a weaver in the village in exchange for goods or labor. Weaving wasn't as widespread as spinning, and not ever household had a hand loom.

Skill with a needle and thread, and sewing, were synonymous with womanhood. This attitude lingered from the witch hunt days, when trouble with cattle and milk was enough to accuse a woman of witchcraft. While women were safe from the pyre for curling milk, the process remained a magical transformation. In a corner of the kitchen, shed, or springhouse, women churned milk into butter and cheese without worries. Butter took over an hour to churn, and then it was kneaded and pressed into solid consistency.

A talented dairywoman could make good money by packing her flavorful butter into tubs or crocks, marking it with a distinctive butter stamp, and selling it or trading it for goods. Cheese-making was more widespread north of Pennsylvania and also provided a decent trade for women. Cooking was the center of a woman's daily life.

Salt, sugar, sugar, spices and coffee had to be taken in bulk form, ground and pounded.
