In general, it's totally do-able - it's less convenient than having your own car, but much cheaper. In the North, there are buses between the main cities well actually shared taxis or dolmuses - frequent and v. For sites outside the cities, taxis are cheap. Actually, there are shared taxis to Bellapais. To St. Hilarion and Buffavento we chartered a taxi - can't remember how much, not more than about 80TL I don't think. In the South buses are ludicrously infrequent, but there are shared taxis like a jitney - you book in advance with the company, details in the LP.

I have visited Cyprus regularly for the last 16 years now. It is certainly not the value for money destination it was known for. In fact quite the opposite. The car is the king in Cyprus. This is a country without a single yard of rail track. Obviously there are bus services, but not up to much I'm afraid. The North is much better for public transport, as the previous poster mentioned about dolmuses.
