The parable illustrates the importance of building one's life on obedience to the teachings and example of Jesus. Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.

The Story of Sand and How It Transformed Civilization

The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall. This parable emphasises the need to put Jesus' teachings into practice, and speaks of "two sorts of people whose hearts are revealed in their actions.

Matthew's version of the parable has a "more complex narrative structure" [2] than Luke's, mentioning rain and winds as well as floods. These forces are usually interpreted ethically , as trials of life that can be resisted by a life founded on Christian doctrine, [2] but can also be interpreted eschatologically.

It ended in an unexpected way, and in some ways I wish there had been more.

I'll be reading more of this author's writing. One person found this helpful. This was a fun little story that took me maybe minutes to read, but it was well thought out and I felt had a nice moral to it. Interesting - would like to see it fleshed out to a longer format, or a follow up. Was given this directly from the author, via his mailing list, and once I got the code Randal and Boyd investigate a strange beach on another world, after already running into gigantic snakes in the forest. They find what appears to be castles made of sand, and wonder who made them.

That night Randal finds out, while Boyd sleeps, and the next day, once he learns Boyd's reaction to just a hint at what might have made them, he has to take drastic measures to protect his own people as well as the sand castle builders. The story had a touch of Lovecraftian otherworldliness, I thought, and though short, it said enough to build the world it needed to exist within.

I give it five stars, well deserved, in my opinion. It was well-written and enjoyable, but I don't like these type of endings.

Several reviews mentioned they didn't expect it, but kinda guessed after reading about his thoughts and his options. I didn't take off any stars because it was a good story, but not my cup of tea. I always like my HEA. The explanation of the sand castles was awesome, but I also believed this story could have been fleshed out in a couple of places.

Otherwise a excellent short story. This short SF story appears to be about encountering aliens on an exploration trip, but the underlying theme is in fact distrust.

The World in a Grain

The party of two men can't trust their instruments after a warm spot in the surface turned out to be deadly serpents nesting, and further evidence shows that they don't trust each other and can't trust the civilisation which employs them. I wouldn't like to be part of this seaside expedition, because I'd need to know I was working in a team committed to backing me up as I would back them.

Interestingly the terms of measurement used still include feet and inches, and the venerable scores, as in twenty. This was an early published work by the author and I'd be interested in seeing if he has developed his undoubted curiosity and sense of wonder at scenery and nature. An ARC was supplied to me. This is an unbiased review.

This is a little gem of a story.

The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock (Sandcastle Kingdoms)

The characters are well developed and quickly establish their role in this alien world. Two explorers coming from radically different approaches. One understands that some things in nature demand respect and should be left alone. The other believes mankind is above all else and whatever it is can be conquered with guns. So what do you do when you find something Jesus said that whoever heard his words and obeyed Him, would be like a wise man who built on a rock. And that house could never be torn down!!! It could never be moved! But if we only hear the wonderful words of Jesus and yet still go our own way and don't do what He says, then we are like a foolish person, who builds his house on the sand!

Just think about that, who would want to build a house on a sand-dune? It sounds very foolish doesn't it? Perhaps the foolish man thought he was safe? His house was standing to start with and it was cosy and warm inside, everything was going just fine. But when the floods came he had no hope! His house fell flat, and great was the fall of it.

What about our lives? When Satan brings temptations and trials to us it may feel like we are being battered by a flood! The Bible refers to the enemy coming in like a flood:. And perhaps you've found yourself standing on sand before.

And when the flood of temptation or trial comes, you fall flat like that foolish man. Don't be discouraged, lets choose to be like the wise man. Who listens to what Jesus tells us in the Bible and does what he says! Jesus is our Rock! He is the firm foundation that we can build our lives upon. And if we obey Jesus, and everything He tells us in his word, the Bible, we have the assurance that no matter what flood beats upon us, no matter how fierce the storms of this life may get we will never fall, we will never be moved.

Teaching is good and very clear. Only those who really do what Jesus says can know the truth. Need more lessons for preaching. Wants you to help with more interesting version to preach. May God Bless You. Thank you very much for sharing! However, I think there's more to the parable of the two builders. This parable was a conclusion to a long sermon Jesus gave on the mount Starting from Matthew 5, and if we can carefully read what Jesus is saying, we will see that none of us can actually do all that Jesus is requiring.

In fact, Jesus said in Matthew 5: If we think that was what Jesus meant, that will be similar to thinking that all Pastors or teachers are evil too, because just like there are self-seeking Pharisees and Scribes in those days, there are also Pastor and teachers who are wolves in sheep clothing today. Rather, Jesus knows that the people acknowledge that the Pharisees and Scribes, who are entrusted with God's holy temple, teachers of God's law, were the most religious people. The people were probably saying to themselves, "who can do more than the Pharisees?? Therefore, when Jesus spoke this parable, He wasn't just telling the people what to do or what not to do, He was helping them to see how badly they are in need of a Savior!

We as Christians are not better than the people of the world because of how good we keep the law of God. Just as there is only one difference between the two builders is the Rock, so it is that Faith in Jesus Christ and what He did on the Cross is the only difference between us and the people of the world. It is with that Faith, and that Faith alone that we can begin to please God and follow Him!!! In conclusion, the Law of God is meant to be a mirror to show us who we really are and why we need a Savior, our Rock! The branches have to be in the Vine in order to produce good fruits.

We assume we understand this story fully, but most of us don't!

Sure, it's about where you build, isn't it? What do you mean - no? Well actually it's about when you build. How do you get that? Think about the context. In summer the ground would go rock hard.
