Read from front to back, and it is about one lot of seals denying a place on their rock for two other seals who are obviously in need of refuge.

But read the book from back to front, and the message is turned on its head, so it becomes a caring and welcoming invitation to the homeless seals to share in the safety of the rock. Lindy Jones Two seals are perched on a rock. When others need shelter, do they share it? Room on Our Rock celebrates the truth that there are two sides to every story. This clever picture book has one story that can be read two different ways. When read from front to back, the seals believe there is definitely no room on their rock for others. But when the book is read from back to front, the seals welcome others to shelter on their rock.

A heartwarming story about sharing and compassion. This is the book for much older students to use, and is uncompromising in its depictions of human misery. Armin Greder never sugarcoats, and if his black-washed images are confronting, they are no more confronting than the reality they depict. There is only one sentence, right on the first page, and the illustrations that follow show the food chain of actions that cause mass exodus as well as the literal food chain… Dark, eloquent, thought-provoking and brilliant.

Lindy Jones Precarious boats navigate the waters of the sea, from south to north. And more often than not, it is not only hope that drowns. A devastating indictment of our society's treatment of refugees by the creator of The Island. With eloquent and devastating imagery, the creator of the multi-award-winning book The Island again asks us to examine our responses to the plight of refugees. How long will we remain silent witnesses? These are known as 'safe and legal pathways' and Amnesty International calls on the international community to provide them to those fleeing war, torture and persecution.

Routes over land, air or sea that would save people having to entrust their lives to crime rings, which is otherwise the only possibility that remains open to them. Loudly proclaiming his differences and his individuality, the feisty animal wreaks havoc in his quest to be understood. Jolly rhyming text and expressive watercolour illustrations capture the character and make this a delight to share with pre-schoolers. Lindy Jones For too long koalas have been called bears.

But this koala is out to prove to the world that he is BARE! And that never, ever, ever can a koala be called a bear From the internationally renowned author of the bestselling Diary of a Wombat comes a hilariously funny picture book that Jackie French has created with talented newillustrator Matt Shanks. The mix of male and female characters also includes indigenous and migrant Australians, scientists and politicians, musicians and journalists, sportspeople and artists - mostly from the 20th century. At the back are thumbnail biographical details, to expand on the accompanying text.

This is no ordinary alphabet book! This is the official A to Z of amazing Aussies that make this country so great. Sometimes irreverent, always charming, and beautifully illustrated by Beck Feiner. When the rains come, the landscape opens up, and the animals and environment are transformed. Simple and elegant text tells of the changes, and the lyrical and evocative illustrations by Fern Martins capture both the small details of plants and animals, and the transition from dry to wet.

A celebration of the seasons; it would make a beautiful souvenir for visitors as well! Lindy Jones Big Fella Rain is a celebration of northern Australia as animals, birds, trees and a parched earth await the first rain. It is almost as if country stands still as the sparse yet evocative text pays homage to the transition from dry season to wet season in a country that is like no other place in the world. Fern Martins illustrations seamlessly portray the dramatic skies, the thirsty animals and tiny creatures whose very existence rely on the monsoonal changes.

Her exquisite rendering of the big landscape against the subtle shifts in the environment have a timeless quality that will capture the hearts of all readers. Just a little bit, sometimes. Okay, quite a lot, often! A seven-year-old boy in my acquaintance absolutely adored this book, thinking it one of the funniest things he's ever read!

But is there more to Sam's occasional streeeetching of the truth than meets the eye? The first book in this laugh-out-loud series by author and illustrator Joe Berger. She's smart so it seems a good idea to go to the school, with its extensive educational programmes. However, it caters for an entirely different class of people, and she soon finds herself friendless and struggling amongst the privileged set. But then she gets an invitation from the golden boy Henry de Warlencourt, embossed with the words: It doesn't take long for her to realise that she and two others also misfits in the school - the nouveau riche daughter of a tech king and the son of an Indian principality are especially chosen, and that the hunting, shooting and fishing is for entirely different quarry than the animals on the isolated estate Nor does he have any great curiosity about the outer world, thinking his life will always be ordered and neat - until a dying man thrusts a mysterious manuscript into his hands with instructions to take it to Aidan and no-one else.

A swift-paced adventure for readers Lindy Jones What's the secret of the book, and why is it so valuable? These are the questions Gabe must answer when a dying man hands him a coded manuscript with one instruction: Gabe is hurled into a quest that takes him beyond his monastery home and into a world of danger, political intrigue and adventure.

As he seeks to decipher the code and find a mystery man who may not even exist, Gabe learns that survival must be earned and that some of life's biggest lessons are not found in books. He also discovers that the biggest secret of all may be his own. Each member has a great fear, and it will be the thing that kills them - her father is agoraphobic, her mother an addicted gambler who fears bad luck, and her twin brother can't abide the dark. When Esther is conned by Jonah, a former friend, and he makes off with her list of things she could potentially be killed by, it starts a strange and beautiful friendship.

Jonah is determined to help Esther surmount her fears, and challenges her to confront them - filming them as they go through the list. Unbeknownst to her, she is becoming a social media star… A likable and imaginative young adult novel, with interesting characters including Death, who has a world-weary line of snappy but almost-compassionate rejoinders and the stirrings of first love. Lindy Jones Ever since Esther Solar's grandfather was cursed by Death, everyone in her family has been doomed to suffer one great fear in their lifetime.

Esther's father is agoraphobic and hasn't left the basement in six years, her twin brother can't be in the dark without a light on, and her mother is terrified of bad luck. The Solars are consumed by their fears and, according to the legend of the curse, destined to die from them. Esther doesn't know what her great fear is yet nor does she want to , a feat achieved by avoiding pretty much everything. Elevators, small spaces and crowds are all off-limits. So are haircuts, spiders, dolls, mirrors and three dozen other phobias she keeps a record of in her semi-definitive list of worst nightmares.

Then Esther is pickpocketed by Jonah Smallwood, an old elementary school classmate. Along with her phone, money and a fruit roll-up she'd been saving, Jonah also steals her list of fears. Despite the theft, Esther and Jonah become friends, and he sets a challenge for them- in an effort to break the curse that has crippled her family, they will meet every Sunday of senior year to work their way through the list, facing one terrifying fear at a time, including one that Esther hadn't counted on - love. A little boy and his mother pack a lunch, set out from Kirribilli to walk across the Bridge and go to the Botanic Gardens for the day.

When they are there, they see an ibis caught up in a plastic bag, and with a lot of help, set it free. This is reminiscent of the well-loved Alexander's Outing and is a joyful portrait of the city with a quiet environmental message conveyed in simple rhythmic text and clean-lined illustrations - a book that will be enjoyed by resident and tourist alike! Lindy Jones This is a story of a plastic bag and a bird - a cautionary tale about taking care of our environment as well as being a wonderful showcase of some of the famous sights of Sydney.

I crossed the harbour bridge then climbed down to Circular Quay. And this is what I saw. And although the other rhinos told her how she had a good life already with everything a rhino could need, still she listened to her own heart and built a boat. Despite all of the others' doubts, she sails away and sees more than she ever dreamed, until she returns home to share her tales: With gentle and happy illustrations in coloured pencil and watercolour by Leila Rudge, this is a sweet encouragement to step outside the everyday and discover the world for yourself.

Once, there was a small rhinoceros who wanted to see the big world. So she built a boat. From the duo behind award-winning picture book No Bears comes a simple yet inspirational tale about challenging the norm, pushing boundaries and being true to oneself. It follows a formula - the standoffish woman, her misfit friend, the English rose daughter-in-law, and the outsider and the abused wife - all women needing to prove their worth in a male-oriented world.

Together they find friendship and succour while attempting to find something finer and more literary in their difficult lives. And yes, while it isn't wildly original, it is an enjoyable, competent and satisfying read, probably best accompanied with a plate of scones and a pot of tea! Lindy Jones In the Northern Territory has begun to self-govern. Cyclone Tracy is a recent memory and telephones not yet a fixture on the cattle stations dominating the rugged outback.

But that doesn't stop Sybil grieving the absence of her child.

With her oldest friend, Rita, now living in Alice Springs and working for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and Ben's English wife, Kate, finding it difficult to adjust to life at Fairvale, Sybil comes up with a way to give them all companionship and purpose: Mother-of-three Sallyanne is invited to join them. Sallyanne dreams of a life far removed from the dusty town of Katherine where she lives with her difficult husband, Mick.

Completing the group is Della, who left Texas for Australia looking for adventure and work on the land. On a hot November weekend at his newly acquired vineyard near Ballarat, barrister Hugh Cleary is hosting a family reunion to celebrate years since Conor Cleary arrived in Australia. With such a vast number of characters to choose from, Drewe has sly fun commenting on family, society and history.

Lindy Jones Kungadgee, Victoria, Australia. A weekend in late November, At Hugh and Christine Cleary's new vineyard, Whipbird, six generations of the Cleary family are coming together from far and wide to celebrate the th anniversary of the arrival of their ancestor Conor Cleary from Ireland. Some of these family members know each other; some don't. As the wine flows, it promises to be an eventful couple of days. Comic, topical, honest, sharply intelligent, and, above all, sympathetic, Robert Drewe's exhilarating new novel tells a classic Australian family saga as it has never been told before.

There's no magic realism - something I love as a reader, though others don't - but there is the beautiful writing and fully-fleshed, believable characters that have characterised her work. I'll go so far as to say this is my favourite book of the year so far, and I don't really think it will be topped. In all ways this is a perfect book, from its narrative structure to its depiction of loss, grief, friendship, love and survival. It's almost impossible to describe this book without giving away the plot, such as it is, but it is about a man who has lost everything he valued. Ellis works in an automotive factory, going through the motions after the two loves of his life died five years previously.

He is haunted by grief and regret and the sheer weariness of keeping going when there seems to be nothing left to live for. The reader learns what he has lost, but we also see the first shoots of regrowth… An entirely believable and truly moving story, one you can go back to and read again and again. I have - four times now. I suspect I will keep this one close! It begins with a painting won in a raffle: And then there are two boys, Ellis and Michael, who are inseparable.

And the boys become men, and then Annie walks into their lives and it changes nothing and everything. Tin Man sees Sarah Winman follow the acclaimed success of her previous novels with a love letter to human kindness and friendship, loss and living. When Gulsa gets caught up on her phone, Henry, who is bored, decides to find Grandma for himself.

After asking at the information desk and not having any luck, he sets off through the hospital looking for her, meeting all sorts of people from patients to doctors. Quite a lot of text and with illustrations that repay close attention, this is a sophisticated picture book originally from Germany with a simple storyline that may have the side effect of demystifying hospitals and how they work. Lindy Jones Henry is visiting his grandmother in the hospital. When his nanny has to take a call, he decides to go on alone. He knows Grandma well, after all!

But the hospital is bigger than he thought, and his visit becomes an odyssey: Staff, patients, and equipment are everywhere. Now Henry isnt sure he will find Grandma after all. This is a hospital odyssey: I rather liked that X stood for Crusader Bugs because the insects have a x-shaped cross on their backs! A book both useful and attractive, for ages Lindy Jones Australia is full of the most amazing animals on the planet!

What animal has six thumbs? What animal produces square poo? What animal is made up of 95 per cent water and is highly venomous? Discover the answers to these questions and more in this factastic tour of Australian animals. The inevitable comparison will be with Shaun Tan's Arrival as it is a work of graphite on paper, although unlike that other masterpiece this book does have text. Rather surreal text, which allows the reader to fill in the gaps and construct the meaning for themselves.

A new neighbour moves in, and asks Ben to do small jobs for him around the yard. It's the late 80s and Ben has been brought up to be polite and helpful. Ben's best friend, Fab, is a bit of a tearaway, exceedingly loyal, and the victim of unacknowledged though well known domestic violence.

They do everything together but Ben starts to become distant, and as they grow older they grow apart. As the narrative switches in time, the reader starts to see what has happened and a chilling story is revealed. Atmospheric and gripping, with a veracity to place only someone who has grown up in a small town can convey, it is the sort of book you read in one sitting, but stays with you for much longer.

Growing up in a small country town, they spend their days playing cricket, yabbying in local dams, wanting a pair of Nike Air Maxes and not talking about how Fab's dad hits him or how the sudden death of Ben's next-door neighbour unsettled him. Almost teenagers, they already know some things are better left unsaid.

Then a newcomer arrived in the Wimmera. Fab reckoned he was a secret agent and he and Ben staked him out. Up close, the man's shoulders were wide and the veins in his arms stuck out, blue and green. His hands were enormous, red and knotty. Maybe even stronger than Fab's dad. Neither realised the shadow this man would cast over both their lives. Twenty years later, Fab is still stuck in town, going nowhere but hoping for somewhere better.

Then a body is found in the river, and Fab can't ignore the past any more. It is a collection of short stories, and the main theme is how people of different backgrounds try to find a place to belong in contemporary Australia. A medical student from Hong Kong meets his white girlfriend's country family for the first time; the Indian doctor who is targeted by an Italian patient who hasn't improved after his broken bones were set in casualty; the girl who finally admits to her Syrian background in a tourist setting; the Chinese grandmother made to feel burdensome.

But there are also tender and perceptive stories about motherhood, loneliness and ageing. Sympathetic, clear-eyed and insightful writing. Australia Day is a collection of stories by debut author Melanie Cheng. The people she writes about are young, old, rich, poor, married, widowed, Chinese, Lebanese, Christian, Muslim. What they have in common-no matter where they come from-is the desire we all share to feel that we belong. The stories explore universal themes of love, loss, family and identity, while at the same time asking crucial questions about the possibility of human connection in a globalised world.

Melanie Cheng is an important new voice, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary Australia. Her effortless, unpretentious realism balances an insider's sensitivity and understanding with an outsider's clear-eyed objectivity, showing us a version of ourselves richer and more multifaceted than anything we've seen before.

Beautifully designed, and presented in a muted palette of soft browns and greens, the illustrations convey the deep need to connect with nature, and celebrate imagination and mindfulness. A quiet book to appeal to the very young - and the much older! Lindy Jones Deep in the heart of the city, Frankie dreams of a thousand trees Award-winning artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers takes readers on a journey of imagination and discovery, exploring the art of nature and the nature of art.

A girl looks out her window on to city street and out to a rainbow. She recalls the farm she used to live on, and how the colours in the rainbow bring different memories and present day contrasts. As she progresses through the spectrum, by the time she reaches indigo, she realises there are things that haven't changed. A reassuring book in its way, that change is not without its compensations. Lindy Jones All the colours of the rainbow are explored against the striking backdrop of two different worlds. A stunning exploration of colour by internationally acclaimed author Sophie Masson and emerging illustrator Michael McMahon.

When Simpson and her partner fell in love with ten steep acres of bush in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, they succumbed to its allure without quite knowing just what they were taking on. This book interleaves natural science and personal story, description and reflection. She learns to look, to see, and finally to recognise not only the trees on her property, but also her own possibilities and strengths.

While each of her novels Mr Wigg ; Nest ; Where the Trees Were has shown a strong connection to land and nature, this book allows her to expand her concerns and observations, and to preserve and celebrate her trees in words - a fine addition to the genre of Australian nature writing. I tend the forest, stand at the foot of trees and look up, gather what has fallen. While the transAtlantic trade in brides was often characterised as American money for European titles, de Courcy takes a slightly different slant.

Yet, if your daughter had married a baronet or an earl or better still a Duke, you had instant cachet…. Telling the stories of many a young heiress who was foisted onto penurious peers or sons thereof this is a sparkling and well researched read. It catches the sophistication of the Gilded Age, as well as conspicuous consumption that was de rigueur - how else would anyone know how rich you were if your wife didn't spend enormous quantities - and wasn't that her prime occupation?

Lovely descriptions of balls and jewels and gowns by Worth counterpoint the stories of what the American girls were exchanging for their coronets, the vast differences in expectations and lifestyles they were plunged into with their marriages. Greatly entertaining, but also a wonderful dissection of high society in the latter parts of the 19th century. Towards the end of the nineteenth century and for the first few years of the twentieth, a strange invasion took place in Britain.

The citadel of power, privilege and breeding in which the titled, land-owning governing class had barricaded itself for so long was breached. The incomers were a group of young women who, fifty years earlier, would have been looked on as the alien denizens of another world - the New World, to be precise. From - the year that Jennie Jerome, the first known 'Dollar Princess', married Randolph Churchill - to , dozens of young American heiresses married into the British peerage, bringing with them all the fabulous wealth, glamour and sophistication of the Gilded Age.

Anne de Courcy sets the stories of these young women and their families in the context of their times. Based on extensive first-hand research, drawing on diaries, memoirs and letters, this richly entertaining group biography reveals what they thought of their new lives in England - and what England thought of them. In this, her fifth collection, she takes her keen eye to a range of subjects, though most of them are concerned in one way or another with the way a certain class of contemporary society lives and behaves, and with the way people so often don't say what they want in the heartfelt expectation that communication is what others should be doing.

From the title story as told by a waterbird decorating a Pompeian garden through to the last story of perfect revenge, via tales of surprise and sometimes even ghosts, these are little gems! A dream house that is hiding something sinister; two women having lunch who share a husband; an old woman doing her weekly supermarket shop with a secret past that no one could guess; a couple who don't know each other at all even after fifteen years together; and, in the story from which this collection takes its name, a bird and a servant girl in ancient Pompeii who cannot converse, but share a perfect understanding.

In this new and varied collection of short stories, Penelope Lively shows that she remains a master of her craft, and one of our finest English writers. Polly has trouble reading her spells, as the letters keep wriggling away - quite an impediment for a young witch. It also makes her the class outcast. Her best friend is Buster, the monster next door who has his own un-monsterly talent of changing colour when emotional , but in their community, witches and monsters are not supposed to be friends.

When Polly makes a monumental blunder that inadvertently releases a huge spell, she becomes feted by the popular girls at school, and as she increasingly enjoys the attention, she forgets what is really important. Illustrated by Rippin, with lots of white space around the text, this book will appeal to newly confident readers. Who ever heard of a witch and a monster being friends? Witches are educated, clever, sophisticated. Monsters are just uncouth. Some are even dangerous. Yet Polly the witch and Buster the feelings monster have been best friends forever.

Somehow, they've managed to keep their friendship a secret. Until one day, when everything changes The author directly addresses the reader, telling the story of the story - how it started as an idea, became a bunch of words, then a heap of drafts and so on through the entire labour intensive process of becoming a physical object. Okay, so there are also a few digressions, with busy illustrators and tigers and astronauts and pirates, and the reader has to get to the very last page before the secret ingredient is revealed, but this is a lovely way of explaining how books are made! Lindy Jones You may think you know how this book was made, but you don't.

Sure, the author wrote many drafts, and the illustrator took a long time creating the art, but then what? How'd it get into your hands? Well, open the cover and read through these pages to find out. Just beware of the pirates and angry tiger. Budding writers and artists will laugh at the mix of reality and the absurd as the story makes its way to a shelf, and a reader.

It follows the journey of Johannes, a boy from Poland whose parents are doctors. He believes what he has heard about Hitler and looks forward to joining the Hitler Youth, until the mistake, as he thinks it, is made, and he finds himself consigned to a concentration camp. There is also Frau Marks, who has tried to save Jewish babies until she is betrayed; and Helga, who helps Johannes at the lowest point of his life; their stories of survival and eventually finding refuge in Australia form the basis of the novel. The theme however is finding forgiveness, and how difficult that is… A fitting conclusion to the war novels.

It is also the story of how they survived the death camps, the vast wilderness faced by refugees in World War Two, and how they eventually found happiness in Australia. The final title in the multi award-winning Hitler series, this compelling story follows on from Heidi's story in Hitler's Daughter and Georg's in Pennies for Hitler, and shows us that evil must be fought and won. But once you've won, the hardest and most necessary battle is to understand and forgive.

And to learn how to love and live again. A Stormy Story of Tempest. It asks whether Macquarie was Founding Father or Failure, and proceeds to lay out the facts of his governorship - what he achieved, his attitudes to emancipists and 'exclusives' and the enemies he made. With clear and concise text, and Bern Emmerichs' energetic illustrations which further the storyline, this is a stimulating and entertaining history for readers Lindy Jones The story of Lachlan Macquarie is an important story in the history of modern Australia that has been largely lost to the current generation of school children.

Whilst we've all seen many things named after Macquarie, few realise the important role he played in the Australia we know today. Lachlan Macquarie's gravestone bears the inscription, 'Father of Australia'. That's quite a claim, but is this a title Macquarie really deserves? He is rightly celebrated for his inspired infrastructure building and his enlightened treatment of convicts and emancipists, but his treatment of the Indigenous population was far from enlightened.

And then there was the Bigge report to the British Parliament that was scathing in its criticism of Macquarie's governorship, on the grounds that he was far too 'democratic'. So how are we to think of this towering figure of Australian history: Michael Sedunary's narrative is both informative and interactive; he poses questions and points out modern parallels.

It covers history, mathematicians and processes, all in an informative but accessible style. Schoolroom sums are crucial in learning the awesome power of mathematics, but they are often a world away from how the knowledge is applied and where it came from.

How Counting Changed the World is there to fill that gap. How Counting Changed the World introduces the amazing people who figured out what numbers are and what they can do. Written to engage, entertain, and enthuse young people, it shows readers how the ideas of long-dead geniuses ended up in their homework assignments: The Mayans of ancient Mexico were using zeros long before anyone else, and we count time and angles in multiples of 60 because that is what the people of Babylon did for good reason.

The novel's lynchpin is the disappearance of a young teenage girl. She was on a New Year holiday with her parents and lagged behind on a country walk.

The whole village turns out to search for her, but she is never seen again. The novel then spreads over the next thirteen years, always circling back to the mystery of Rebecca's whereabouts; yet what it does is describe the people of the village and their lives, the traditions that bind and the changes that gradually overtake them, and the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

Equal importance is given to things such as the movement of herons and badgers, the gardens in the allotments, the flow of water and weather, as to the human stories unfolding gradually: A paragraph may continue the stories of a number of human characters in a few lines and then relate the seasonal happenings in the natural world - a beautifully elegant and exquisitely observed narrative. But then there is a referendum, and maybe, just maybe, things will change for the better.

Simple text tells the story of the historic Referendum and of how two strong women Faith Bandler and Jessie Street fought for the Yes vote. It is an excellent introduction to the complex issues and attitudes of the day, with notes at the back of the book explaining how prejudice was enshrined. The illustrations are by Indigenous artist Paul Seden, who uses his pen and ink watercoloured drawings against scanned archival photographs.
