The material the wires were constructed from had, therefore, to be very strong.

Tungsten steel was the only option. Ormistions Wire Ltd supplied the many thousands of meters required for the puppets, and also went on to develop special treatments for non-reflection. This augmented the common practice of painting wires to match the backgrounds in close-ups. On average, a puppet needed nine wires to operate; and these were attached to a wooden control bar. The puppets were wired and tested from an overhead gantry; and, if successful in trials, they were then taken to the wardrobe department, for costume fittings.

Their clothes were made from fine-textured materials, to prevent them becoming too bulky. In a tiny room close to the puppet workshop, Betty Coleman produced over five hundred costumes, from pyjamas to dinner suits. Lady Penelope was given special treatment in this respect and had her own couturier , Zena Relph , who made an average of one outfit a week.

The most problematic puppets to work with were characters who were bald , like The Hood. This was because, if a string broke, the replacement had to be tied off inside the head; then the join had to be sealed with plasticine, smoothed off and painted over. Bald-headed puppets were the first to later be operated from rods underneath on some occasions, doing away with the need for strings altogether. The sound frequency of the spoken words was then converted into an electronic impulse that operated an electromagnetic switch or solenoid in the puppet's head. This controlled a lever mechanism that opened the puppet's lower lip in synchronisation with the dialogue - resulting in a system known as "lip-sync.

The voltage running from the wires on the gantry to the coil in the solenoid turned it into a magnet , pulling the central bar backwards. As the bar moved back, it pulled on a wire , attached to a thin rod at the rear of the bottom lip. The rod and lip were pivoted at the ends. As the bar was pulled, the rod rotated clockwise and the lip moved down , opening the mouth.

Each eyeball was pivoted at the top, where it was attached to a bar. At the rear of each eyeball was an eye-hook ; these were attached to a joining bar by press-studs for easy removal.

This bar had string attached to each end; as the string was pulled by the puppeteer, the bar moved from left to right , pulling the eye-hooks and thus turning the eyes. The eye-hooks only moved horizontally because of the slotted guide bar, which was glued to the inside of the front of the face. To save time and money, a number of guest puppets - known as revamps - were to made regular appearances. Revamps would begin life faceless, apart from basic eyes and mouths, and their features sculptured in plasticine as required.

Afterwards, they were stripped down and stored for future appearances in other guises. If a particular revamp was considered good, he or she would be kept as they were. Such a large quantity of characters began emerging from the studio, that a casting directory , containing all their photos, was introduced. Sign In Don't have an account? Contents [ show ].

The story really moved along with the characters trying to stay one step ahead of the Russian mobsters. The ending was good and I like the crisp way the story was told.
