If nothing else, the book reminds readers that Syria hosted two million Iraqi refugees, mostly sunni refugees, the same constituency that gave birth to ISIS in western Iraq and Eastern Syria.

We all know the importance of female friendship and empowerment in our lives.

And the reward for Syria: This book loses a star and I am being vey generous for dismissing Syrian security forces concerns about jihadists within the two million Iraqi refugee community. The same Syria who has been hosting for decades more than a million Palestinian refugees expelled by Israel, also mostly Sunni, and mostly desperately poor.

It doesn't take a genius to see what the evil empire and its fanatic religious regimes allies have done to the cradle of civilisation, in Syria, in Iraq and Palestine. One Canadian, the other Iraqi. Both must find strength to deal with gigantic difficulties. This is the story of A Disappearance in Damascus. You get to meet a myriad of characters and each one is interesting enough to have a whole book written about them.

Each one is described with just enough detail that you can imagine them living and breathing without slowing down the building momentum of the story. Couldn't put it down.
