Dec 14, Greg Brozeit rated it really liked it Shelves: The early stories are a literary sketchbook of sorts focusing on character studies or fragmental episodes. Some of the stories have disturbing themes, such as a woman who loses her wedding ring while working in the fields and sets off a tragic chain of events. Others focus on the day-to-day life in the Weimar era, especially on lives of workers in the former estates of the former eastern part of pre-WWII Germany.

My favorite was the story of a news reporter who suggests the idea of opening a gas station in a small town constantly bypassed by commercial traffic. The ensuing community debate brings out many of the inconsistencies and tensions between the political factions in Weimar. In the end the reporter vows to never have a new idea again.

The two I most enjoyed were about the novice farmer who learns that hedgehogs are not pests, but loyal partners and one about a boy who outsmarts a bear and a fox who enter his house with magic caps that make them invisible. Fallada was one of the few noted writers who remained in Germany during the Third Reich.

Thomas Mann denigrated those who remained—which is probably a reason why it took me so long to find him. His experiences gave him a perspective that many exiled writers did not have.
