In days of yore, controversies in the church were mostly matters of disagreement as to what the Scriptures teach, all parties equally reverencing the Bible as a divine production. Now, numerous professing disciples could not care less about scriptural authority. There was a by-gone era when one could travel the country and have little concern about when he would stop for worship. Today, he is likely to encounter anything from women worship leaders, to a jazzed-up service with instrumental music.

Many of our young preachers know little, if anything, about restoration history. Those who ignore history are destined to repeat its mistakes.

Similarly, the New Testament rings with the admonition that a horrible future awaits those who ignore the instructions to walk in the ways prescribed by the Creator. A stark example is found in 2 Peter, chapter 3. There, the inspired apostle reminds his readers of the great Flood of the distant past, and of the coming destruction of this globe. Society cannot survive without law, and legal codes existed in abundance in the antique world.

The Sumerians in southern Mesopotamia had a law system in the 20th century B. Hammurabi, years later, initiated a very advanced law code. For a consideration of this matter, see our article, The Code of Hammurabi. Jehovah expected Israel to abide by his laws.

There will ever be a need to remind men that they are subject to the law of the Creator. It is an amazing thing that in our day there are those rebels who suggest that as Christians, we are not under law.

ASK FOR THE OLD PATHS

We are under law to our Sovereign cf. Finally, a concluding motivation of returning to the ancient way is that this is the only avenue to the rest that is so sought by the weary. Thousands responded to this message, which was so uniquely in contrast to stale Romanism and Protestantism. In Jeremiah's day, the religious leaders minimized the societal trends that represented true sin in the sight of God.

As Jeremiah said earlier in the chapter: "Prophets and priests alike To Jeremiah, it was serious. He implored his nation to stand at the crossroads and ask for the ancient paths and walk therein. As a Christian pastor, I feel kinship with his words. That verse begins with: "This is what the Lord says If you read through his book underlining such phrases with a red pen, you'll run out of ink.

The Old Paths: Obsolete or Pressing Need?

There's a lesson in that. People don't care much about my opinions or yours. We may be wrong. We aren't infallible. But what does the Bible say? What does God say? I'm convinced that's what people need, and that's what they want to hear.



One of the reasons I'm adamantly a Christ-follower is because Christianity follows the strongest chain of logic I know. It is supremely intellectual. It is intellectually reasonable.

Our lives work better when we follow His instructions to the jot and tittle. The next phrase says: "Stand at the crossroads and look. They could turn toward God or they could continue down a broad path of self-destruction. Perhaps you're at a crossroad in your marriage, in your moral convictions, in your vocational decisions, about your goals for the future.

Our nation is at a crossroads, and our decisions have consequences. As actress Helen Mirren said, "You write your life story by the choices you make. When you're at a crossroad, what do you do?
