Jeremy Rollins is a young man with a very strange affliction. He has the uncanny and uncontrollable ability to deflect any physical attack and its associated pain and injury to the attacker's closest relationship. Born with this condition, Jeremy's mother had the foresight to home school him and limit his contact to the outside world.

She feared that if he were ever discovered, men in white coats would conscript and subject him to unspeakable experiments. This upbringing makes him awkward and childlike, and upon the unexpected passing of his mother, Jeremy is forced to confront a corrupt town and face the realities of a harsh society and the cruelties of its people. He encounters a variety of unsavory town folk - a dominating bully who is the sheriff's son, the sheriff who is in the pocket of a corrupt banker, a gold-digging temptress and a reverend who has lost his way.

I'm sure it could have been done slightly better I'm sure we can all relate to at least one character personally and know quite a few of the other characters in their circle This is the type of story that can happen in any town in any country What you do to the least of people you do to the most loved of people Everyone places value on relationships at different levels Your mom may be the best relationship you ever have In this town that was Jeremy If I could have his "gift" I would probably understand why at times I feel I'm mistreated Sign In.

Jan 5. Vibe Check unknown. A spontaneous and usually random time where someone checks your vibe. I loved how patient and caring James was with Carly. He gave her the time to get to know him and trust him. He was always honest of where he hoped they could go, but let her set the pace. And his relationship with Jack was so sweet. I could not put this book down. I loved seeing a story about an older couple that knows how to have fun together and get to know each other throughout the story. This was a slow burn story that will draw you in.

A Better Place

I loved all the characters and the story. A great read! Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog. Happy reading! I admire JVW books because they're not your normal romance. She writes about older characters with real problems. She shows their struggles but also shows how they work together to overcome whatever obstacles face them.

That's the case with A Better Place. We get a nice mix of characters from book 1 but this novel is focused on James and Carly, two souls floating through life happily. But when they meet, they realize their lives had I admire JVW books because they're not your normal romance.

But when they meet, they realize their lives had been sorely lacking. Carly holds back for good reason and James is as patient as a person could be. JVW has a great ability to make you feel a part of these characters lives. She deals with serious issues wrapped in a wonderful romance. A Better Place is a great mix of romance, drama, intrigue, and humor. I can't wait for more reads from JVW. She's a fresh breath of air in the indie world. I love this book! A single parent romance with mature characters both in their 40s that is beautifully sweet and packed with emotion. You could read this one on its own, but there is a lot of character crossover, and I recommend reading them in publication order in order to fully follow the dynamics: 1.

From the Ground Up 2. A Better Place 3. Feels Like Home 4. James is the brother of Tess from book 1, and he is a single father to a year-old daughter, Lily. An embarrassing encounter during school drop off sparks a wild attraction that takes them both by surprise, and puts them on a path that neither of them were expecting. James has been on his own since his ex-wife walked out when his daughter was only three, and since then he has put his life on hold to be there for his girl. Carly experienced hell in her marriage. He is sweet, funny, and just such a good guy, and I adored him pretty much instantly.

And Carly is a wonderful character. James and Jack together absolutely melted my heart, and I love the relationship that they develop. This is such a great group, all very tightly bound together, and I loved seeing them all encouraging James and Carly along the way. No doubt about it.

James and Carly are open and honest, they tease and laugh and are all-in with each other, even while keeping things friendly. Their romance is sweet, sexy and swoony with all the feels, and I loved this one! This was my first read from Ms. Van Wyk. I was blown away from the start, the prologue was just like BAM! Am I going to like it? Are they going to be able to catch my attention? Well, I can say, Ms. Van Wyk accomplished all of that and more. The strength that Carly and her son, Jack, possess is amazing. Yes, they are only characters This was my first read from Ms.

Yes, they are only characters in a book, but when an author is able to make you feel every emotion that the characters experience means they have done their job.

Helping make the world a little bit more beautiful

Then to introduce a new element into the equation, that element being a man, well, all bets are off to what is going to happen. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Her books have serious and realistic plots that many can relate with. A Better Place hit the mark! A Better Place tells the story of James and Carly, who meet when James drops off his niece at school. Both of them are single parents who haven't been out there trying to find love, but are suddenly overcome with feelings When I first discovered Jennifer Van Wyk a few months ago after reading From the Ground Up- if you haven't read it, then get to it!
