The story is, by default, interesting and I feel that the author made a wholehearted effort to research and retell the tale. Hence the three stars. Unfortunately, the author really needed an editor.

The whole book is so disastrously disorganized that the author is constantly repeating and occasionally contradicting himself.

Not only do the endless rehearsals of the evidence become tedious in the extreme yes, we KNOW the Isles of Shoals are 10 miles off the coast; you've told us times! We KNOW the alleged killer wore size 11 boots!

    4. Anethe is brutally slain with an axe, and then at the beginning of the next section, she's alive again! And is then murdered again. On top of the disorganization, the writing itself is amateurish and clumsy, and there are enough typos and perpetual misplacements of commas to completely distract the reader from the story.

    I was also uncomfortable with the author's tendency to put thoughts and emotions into the subjects' heads. He does state from the start that he will do this, but it made it difficult for me to tell what was fact and what was conjecture. Some footnotes or citations would have gone a long way towards convincing me of the veracity of the story he was telling. By the end, rather than feeling illuminated and connected to the story, more than anything I wanted to go in search of another source that might tell me what actually happened.

    Finally, the author presents the story as if there was no doubt as to Louis Wagner's guilt, going so far as to rehearse the murders one of several renditions through Wagner's eyes, even though he states that there is still a fair amount of controversy as to the real killer's identity. I think the book would have been far more compelling if the evidence were weighed more objectively, and other plausible explanations given in more detail. So, if the author perhaps decides to do a second edition of this book, my advice to him would be: It's obvious his intentions were good, but the execution was poor.
