The text of the novel is that of the edition, corrected from the original manuscript. Thus giving the modern reader a chance to read Scott's novel as he originally intended. Changes to the text especially those of the 'Magnum' edition are indicated separately.

Very good burgundy limp leather. Bright gilt titles and decoration. Gilt top. Bookmark ribbon. Light wear, clean interior. It was published anonymously, and subsequent novels were issued as 'By the author of Waverley'; hence the name 'the Waverley Novels. The Melrose Edition. A very good complete set of 27 volumes, each with a colour frontispiece plate, title page. Bound in quarter leather, with green cloth covered boards, page edges gilt, six gilt decorated spine compsrtments. Bindings strong with some signs of wear and rubbing, green leather faded on the spines, joints firm no cracking.

Contents clean and tight, original endpapers, slightly marked to some of the first and last few pages, no inscriptions or other marks. A very good tight set.

Volumes 1 and 2 only in non matching period leather bindings of this very scarce 1st impression in need of Vol 3 and uniform rebinding. Vol 1 in full leather with front board virtually detached - rear board sound but joint cracked. Internally half title before title page is missing but half-title after title page still present. Ownership signature to top of title page.

Otherwise pages foxed and age toned with some kind of paint stain approximately size of a sixpence on page covering smaller area of the text and matching area opposite on page with some surface lost affecting a couple of words in the text. Vol 2 1st issue with 'our' not 'your' page first line half leather binding sound, joints ok but spine label missing. Internally both half titles present with age toning to pages and only minor foxing.

The two volumes are the same size. First American edition. The Rare First American Edition. This first of the famous Waverley Novels was published anonymously, and Scott did not officially acknowledge writing it until the s. With this novel, Scott virtually invented a new literary form, leaving behind the extreme artificiality of the Gothic novel and rooting his fiction in fact. Rebacked, preserving spines, some spotting and staining to text, paper toned.
