In the next eight chapters before her death, members of the family except the father, Beck, tell their stories, slowly revealing the events that have formedtheir attitudes. As she ages, Pearl loses her sight, and Ezra, her unmarried son, describes photographs to her and reads her diary aloud. As he details facial features and clothes, she identifies the person and the moment.
When he mentions a middy blouse, she remembers Cousin Elsa, and Pearl hear[ing] their fluid voices, feel[ing] the crisp ruching of the ladies shirtwaists, smell[ing] their pomades and lavender water and the sharp-scented bottle of crystals that sickly Cousin Bertha had carried to ward off fainting spells. She also recalls Beck Tull at the Charity Baptist Church when she was an unmarried orphan of thirty who had refused money to attend college; he was twenty-four and a salesman.
She felt that he was her reward for attending with the Baptists.
She became a member. When her first child was born, she worried that something would happen to himso she had a second, and then a third, but found that all were individuals, impossible to re- place. Beck stayed until their oldest son, Cody, was fourteen. When he left, Beck said he would not visit the children, and Pearl felt. Pearl told the children he had gone on a long journey, and, to support the children, she started working as a cashier in Sweeneys Grocery while gradually ceasing her attendance at the Baptist church. The oldest child, Cody, remembers the familys poverty and Pearls special love for his younger brother Ezra.
He tells friends that his father is missing in action and silently asks the absent Beck why he left: was it something I said? Was it something I did? Was it something I didnt do, that made you go away? All during his childhood, Cody goads and teases Ezra, and after Becks depar- ture, he recalls Pearls frustrated exclamation, Parasites. I wish youd all die, and let me go free.

But when many years later, Ezra announces his engagement to Ruth, a much younger woman, Cody retaliates and temporarily assuages his animosity by wooing and winning her.
Later Cody worries that Ezra will steal their son, Luke, and thus makes excuses not to visit. Jenny, the middle child, also responds to her abandonment. Ezra, always Pearls favorite, bears the guilt of not doing what she wantsattend college and become a teacher.
Ezra instead works for Mrs. Before her death, Mrs. Scarlatti tells Ezra that she has willed the restaurant to him, and he begins to renovate while she lies ill in the hospital. She sees his additions and asks himto change the restau- rants name. He calls it the Homesick Restaurant where he serves food that people felt homesick for.
Soon he loses Ruth, his cook and fiance, to Cody. Later he refuses to go to the doctor when he finds a lump in his thigh because the theme of his life has always been Let it be. He, however, does not aban- don Pearl. He stays with her and finally finds the one passage of importance to her in her diary. Early this morning. I went out behind the house to weed. Was kneeling in the dirt by the stable with my pinafore a mess and the perspiration rolling down my back, wiped my face on my sleeve, reached for the trowel, and all at once thought, Why I believe that at just this moment I amabsolutely happy.
