Midfielders who mostly played further up the pitch were not considered. As brilliant as he was brutal, Graeme Souness was the complete midfielder.

Why are queue times for Damage role players so high?

He both scored and created goals. The Scot was also one of the toughest, most uncompromising players in football history — a man who once broke the jaw of an opponent, Movila of Dinamo Bucharest, for having the audacity to beat him with an audacious piece of skill. Souness wasn't a man who made many friends on the pitch. He wasn't even universally popular among his Liverpool team-mates but he commanded respect. A pure winner, the former Reds captain won five league titles and three European Cups during his six-year spell at Anfield. As former team-mate Alan Hansen once mused, "Among midfielders, Graeme was the king.

Tigana was a tireless runner who would hunt down opponents and win the ball off them to launch attacks. Tigana was also a key part of the wonderful Bordeaux side that dominated French football in the s and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in , only to lose narrowly to eventual winners Juventus.

Roy Keane was such a troubled character that questions over his temperament regularly overshadowed his talent. Just like his manager at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson, he demanded nothing less than per cent commitment from himself and those around him. The Corkonian missed the final of the latter through suspension but, as Ferguson was at pains to point out, their treble-clinching triumph in Barcelona in would not have been possible without Keane, who produced a Herculean performance in the semi-final second-leg win over Juventus in Turin. Voted best player at the World Cup, Didi was one of the first Brazilian free-kick masters and, fittingly, the man believed to be responsible for coining the term 'The Beautiful Game'.

Of the 20 goals he scored for the Selecao, a dozen came from dead-ball situations. He was also a brilliant passer and dictator of the play, winning two World Cups and scoring the first ever goal at the legendary Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Few of his old colleagues would disagree. He was a serial winner in competitive games too, though. The legendary Benfica and Portugal sides of the s had two Mozambique-born superstars. He would dominate teams and also scored a lot of goals — in 16 seasons at Benfica, to be precise. A man for the big occasion, he found the net in successive European Cup finals as Benfica beat Barcelona in and Real Madrid a year later.

Forever tied to Eusebio in grace and greatness, the pair passed away just weeks within each other in Tardelli was as driven as they come, a player willing to do whatever it took to reclaim possession for his side. He wasn't just a brutal ball-winner, though. He was also technically excellent and tactically intelligent, an integral part of not only the Italy side that conquered the world, but also the Juventus team that won every major European cup during Giovanni Trapattoni's decade at the helm.

The brains of the team, Gerson controlled the midfield in every game in Mexico and delivered a man-of-the-match performance during the final win over Italy. A wonderful passer with a ferocious left foot, he blasted home a screamer from outside the area while the game was delicately poised at , opening the floodgates for the Selecao as they claimed the Jules Rimet Trophy for a third time.

Total Football's complete midfielder, Johan Neeskens was an integral member of the Ajax and Netherlands teams that changed the game during the s. Neeskens even ended up following Cruyff to Barcelona , and then the US. Neeskens, though, was a great player in his own right, a tireless runner with a penchant for scoring goals. However, as a former right-back, he was also excellent defensively, a ferocious tackler who was nicknamed 'El Toro' by an adoring Camp Nou crowd.

Wolfgang Overath was so good that he restricted the great Gunter Netzer to only 37 caps for his country.

Since I Lost My Baby

Overath was a genius on the ball, a masterful creator of chances with a beautiful left foot. I will proceed to publicize in my network, as I did previously. Thank you for the feedback and appreciation of my curating of music!

Thank you also for the song suggestions. I am glad that you found the topic and that you were able to find some new sad songs to listen to! I think we all enjoy and want happiness, but there is something true and profound about sadness--which is probably why it can help us to create awesome things.

It is interesting that you should point that out, because many great works and things we have come to know and love have come from sadness either directly or indirectly. Thank you for your feedback and song suggestion. I have added it to this list. I am going to offer several suggestions today, then add some more after I finish updating my youtube channel. Hope you enjoy. Thank you for curating music so thoughtfully. I also enjoy listening to sad music. I feel that there is someone that also feel the way I feel at the moment. Or sometimes I don't feel sad, but I think sadness is such a strong feeling that makes you create awesome things.

I agree that some of those songs doesn't come to my mind when I think about sadness actually, but I guess that it depends on the person. So I wanna add a song that comes to my mind that I use to listen when I'm sad, maybe you guys also enjoy it:. I am glad that your song has received many video views from being on my other hub and I can check out some songs for this hub. Are you up for more submissions? I am so thrilled to be included on your other hub!

I've gotten many video views thanks to you and your site. I added Whitney Houston to this song list after I had created the poll and we can't make make modifications to the polls without erasing the previous votes so I have not added Whitney or the other songs that were added after the poll started collecting votes. I was thinking of adding another poll for the songs that were added after the poll but every time a song is added to the Hub it would be the same thing.

I get chills when I listen to it. There is definitely a connection between music and what we associate it with that gives it power, or more power if it already has it. There was such tragedy to Whitney's life. Whitney gave that song so much power and emotion, and that song reflects both her career high her amazing and moving voice and her life low her funeral , which is sad. Thank you for the song suggestion. I will add it to the list I didn't see Whitney Houston on your poll.

I Will Always Love You is very sad to me. Not just the song, but the tragedy of Whitney.

English in Ireland Idiom #2: Mind Yourself!

Also, during her funeral as her coffin was being carried out, they started playing that song and I cried for her. I guess there's a pattern of funerals with songs that affect me. Hi M L Morgan, thank you for your comment. Gotta sing that pain out! Hello JTRyder, I am glad that you love the list, especially since some of the artists may not have initially seemed like a fit! I had never heard that song from Nina Simone until I checked out the link you provided.

It does have an overall melancholy to it. Thank you for the suggestion. I added it to the list. Nice topic. I'd have to say I agree with the Lana Del Rey songs. She just has a way with vocalising pain so well. Love the list!

Although some of the artists listed wouldn't have popped into my head as matching my musical tastes, I found I liked almost every one of them listed. I have one for you You are definitely not the only one! The story behind the choreography and music was meaningful and how it all came together was poignant and well done. Thank you for sending me the link. What a sad love song! I will add it to this hub. As a dancer, you will have had your share of "feeling" the music and relating it to your work.

And as you mentioned it can change anything and everything. We are such sensory beings. It is neat how humans can connect on so many levels and on different levels including dance and music. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who appreciates sad music sometimes! This is such a comprehensive list across so many different genres. I'm not sure if you follow So You Think You Can Dance, but they did a piece to that song, and it absolutely destroyed me.

  • I've been a dancer for 18 years, so I completely understand the way that music can change anything and everything. This is a really great list! Hi there EnyaBrennan61, thank you for your comment and feedback! I am glad that you like the list! Enya would be a perfect addition to this list; I don't know how I missed her. I just listened to "On My Way Home" and it is a nice song!

I did not add it to the list because I thought it was a little bit more upbeat than the other songs in the list and "The Memory of Trees" didn't have words which is why I didn't add it. But because of your suggestion I did add an Enya song and I will keep your song suggestions in mind for future song lists that I make! I hope that the good moments and good feelings outweigh the melancholic and sad moments, and that music continues to make you feel good when faced with the melancholic and sad moments.
