Compared to his Magical Chorus , I think it is evident Volkov's true personal affinity for Russia's literary offerings starts in the late 19th century His authority when speaking on the artists and writers fueling the 20th century onward seems more heartfelt and nestled. I can relate to that, but read this as a precursor, to pay homage and learn more extensively about those who "set the stage. Don't expect an extensive biography on the tsars.

As an enormous empire, it covered over a sixth of the globe; the cultural achievements of its artists were known and admired throughout Europe.

    This book is the first to examine the relationship between those artists and the Romanov rulers, and to dispute the caricature of the Tsars as indifferent to the arts.
