In this short tale, Yandroth sends weird creatures to battle Strange in the Dimension of Dreams. Fury appears in the tale "Today Earth Died! Fury doesn't battle Cold War spies. Instead, he dreams about dealing with a strange alien from outer space. The alien doesn't come in friendship. He plans to destroy the Earth!
Strange Tales comes off like a, well, strange title for a superhero book. The series was home to both Doctor Strange and Nick Fury.
How and why did this occur? Turning the clock back to the early history of comic books, the original version of Strange Tales focused on horror and fantasy tales in anthology form. Comics popularized anthology crime, terror, and sci-fi books, but controversies sunk the often over-the-top books. Superheroes returned to take their place as the primary stars of the comic book world. Something else was going on behind the scenes in the comic book publishing world that lead to the heroes finding themselves in and out of an anthology book. The companies agreed to publish a set number of titles per month.
An anthology series allowed Marvel to release one book with two heroes. Strange Tales was one title. The books following the temporary cancellation of Strange Tales presented different numbering. Strange Tales seemingly turned into a new book as Doctor Strange debuted with issue The Sorcerer Supreme gained a cult following due to the uniqueness of his character and stories.
Series Listing
Jim Steranko handled both the writing and artist duties in this issue. His work continued with a handful of issues in the Nick Fury solo series. Steranko's brief run offered some of the most impressive storytelling and artwork seen in comic books at the time. Both Nick Fury and Stephen Strange garnered expanded interest in comic book collecting circles thanks to the live-action rebirth of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Elements of the Bronze and Silver Age versions of these characters find their way into the cinematic ones. Let the films inspire you to read up on their early appearances. This was one of the storylines they really played up in the later issues of Marvel Saga, so I remember seeing a lot of these panels there. So what's the deal with this "Cyttorak" energy; flexible enough to bend around someone, then unbreakable enough to bind them but also able to "reveal"?

In anticipation of the forthcoming Doc Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, no less , I decided to brush up on this saga and all the preceding "Strange Tales" stories.
Have them collected in the miniature two-volume Pocket Books reprint from It's compelling, esp. One highlight is that whole intense episode devoted to Strange just trying to probe the comatose Ancient One's mind, which has many dangerous subconscious defenses. It's so odd, though, how through this whole thing Clea is never even named. Denny O'Neil would finally christen her a couple of issues later.

Wish the Pocket Books reprint included those final two issues that Ditko drew. And that's the heart of the matter here, of course: Ditko's psychedelic art. For me, the apex of his work is the issue "If Eternity Should Fail! Ditko's work was, of course, hugely influential as an alternative to Kirby and brought more of an Eisner influence to Marvel, as Ditko was inspired by his work in his youth It's easy to see what, for instance, Starlin took from him, such as the general approach to drawing trippy, surreal extradimensional spaces.
You can identify some more specific borrowings, too. Clea's fetching webbed leggings turn up in green as part of Gamora's skimpier bodysuit. Later, the garb of the DC character The Weird seems closely modeled on the outfits of Mordo's wraiths, who also have a similar habit of floating through walls. And Strange's final foe here, the shape-shifting Tazza, seems to anticipate the uncanny Mass from "Dreadstar," who likewise sprouts wings, tentacles, whatever and has a habit of enveloping foes. I can't resist noting that the young Roy Thomas writes that some water Strange plunges into is "below freezing.
But you forgive all or at least a lot for the best panels, like the one reprinted above under the heading "He eventually seeks the aid of Eternity If the movie can capture some of this style, I'll probably be happy. Witches Witches This forgotten mini-series about a cabal of witches starred Doctor Strange. It does not fit here in continuity. Avengers See New Avengers. After 7: Giant-Size Avengers Vol.
Doctor Strange appears throughout every issue of the main House of M series. Marvel Vol. Much of this story is told in flashback, but it acts as part of the run-up to both Civil War and World War Hulk. Before the Avengers are embroiled in a Civil War, Doctor Strange takes a break for two limited series.
Strange Tales Vol 1
Vaughan and Marcos Martin. Strange is a supporting character throughout this series. Doctor Strange is not an official member of The Avengers in this period, but his appearances in New Avengers represent the primary progression of his story — including a major change in status quo to his position as Sorcerer Supreme!
Doctor Strange appears only briefly in the main series, though he is present in several tie-ins. Because so much of the series is told in flashback, it does not make sense to thread it through this era although some of the flashbacks have been listed above. As a member of the Illuminati, Doctor Strange is a key participant or, villain, depending on your viewpoint in this event.
Damage Control Mystic Hands Of Dr. Strange : Not collected. Doctor Strange does not participate directly in this event, though his actions in the Illuminati precipitated it and he briefly appears in 8. Only implied in Siege: Doctor Strange does not participate in this event. Doctor Strange appears throughout this event and is one of the featured stars of Fear Itself: The Deep.
