He picked us up at our hotel doorstep, at the start time we chose, and talked about interesting parts of London on the drive out. All the while he was also getting to know our own interests so that he could tailor his guiding to what we would like. We drove in a comfortable van to Stonehenge, which he knew well and clearly loved to describe.

The same was true with Hampton Court, where he again helped us understand how it came to be, the different architectures, the history of what happened there. In between he took us to a charming country pub for lunch.

When it was all done, he delivered us right to our hotel where he had picked us up. I felt that, even though he had his own favorite way to show these sites, he also let us set the pace and spend more or less time at different points as it suited us. I am so glad we were able to visit these sites with someone as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as Nigel. He admitted it was a great way for him to indulge his love of history. The whole day was a first-rate experience done just the way we wanted. Thank you for the lovely review. It's great to experience many different parts of the culture over here. As well as fascinating places like Stonehenge and Hampton Court Palace, lunch at a country pub can be a very enjoyable part of a day out. Our family of five, including our children aged 23, 21, and 18, used Mirandus Tours over two days for our trip to London and the UK and it was the best decision of our vacation. A few weeks before we traveled, Nigel called us at our home in California Skype was problematic that day to discuss our interests and came up with an itinerary that would please my wife and me and the kids.

On the days of our tours, he picked us up at our hotel he was on time both days - in fact, he was already out in front of the hotel to greet us when we came out and filled us in on the sights along the way to our primary destinations. Our first day included trips to Stonehenge and Oxford and was fantastic and made all the more memorable not only by Nigel's extensive knowledge of the sites, which is to be expected, but also by the personal touch you get by having a private guide. The experience is more intimate and doesn't come with the herd-like feeling that accompanies traveling with larger tour groups.

Our second day started with the Tower of London. Nigel timed our visit to avoid the long lines for the Crown Jewels that come later in the day. His commentary during our walk through kept everyone, kids included, interested we had our doubts and thought they would be bored at the Tower. He also keeps things flexible. My wife asked about Notting Hill and Nigel added a walking tour of this district which turned out to be a real highlight.

Finally, Nigel's personal touch included connecting with all of our kids. He also talked to our son about current music. Thank you so much for the lovely review.

A man with a reputation for building value and transforming company's expectations, in his first three years he is credited with reshaping the company's management team and getting its finances on a more stable footing.

To counter-act that, he's taken a number of decisive steps, not least parting company with Stephen Nelson, BAA's commercial director turned chief executive, and hiring Colin Matthews, Severn Trent's former chief executive, in his place. I think BAA thought it was the airlines because they pay the landing charge. My view is, forget that, the customer is the person that's walking through the airport. He also points out that there was a distinct culture of blame-shifting within the company, with BAA blaming airlines and customs for delays, and vice-versa. They're not interested [who's at fault] and if we, as the owners of the airport, try and get a relationship with the suppliers, then actually that's better for us.

A stark pragmatist, Sir Nigel acknowledges that Heathrow will never be perfect. He realises planes will always be delayed, bags will inevitably be lost, but that if each passengers visit is somehow better than the last — in some small way — then BAA is winning the fight. We're not perfect and we're never going to be, but the way we handled the ash cloud situation was an indication of how we've improved. As hands-on as a chairman can be without interfering with BAA's executive team, he recalls times when he has quietly stood by the security checkpoints at Heathrow to watch the flow of passengers, and how passengers and security guards interact, and how it might be improved.

His conversation is also littered with anecdotes from close friends based on their travels, as well as his own, flying frequently to Johannesburg in his role as a non-executive director of Sappi, the South African paper and pulp giant. Clearly proud of Heathrow and what it has become — boasting that it dealt with its busiest day of passengers on record in July, some ,, without any major glitches - he also acknowledges that passengers receive different treatment depending on which airline they fly, with BA's Terminal Five currently the jewel in Heathrow's crown.
