Through the combination and juxtaposition of different approaches to East Germany, it overcomes intra-disciplinary conceptual binaries and revitalises debates about the very concepts we use to understand life under late twentieth-century state socialism. My research asks how Germans in East and West engaged with the deep-reaching social and political changes of the postwar era in their everyday environments.

I am particularly interested in oral history approaches and spatial histories which offer insights into the entanglement of the Cold War with individual life histories. My PhD thesis, which received the Thesis Prize of the German Historical Institute London, uses two-case study villages in the divided Germany to challenge grand narratives of a Cold War divergence between the socialist dictatorship of the East and the liberal democracy of the West.

Based on a wide range of archival sources as well as oral history interviews, I argue that there are parallel histories of responses to social change among villagers in postwar Germany. My thesis therefore offers a history of Cold War Europe that does not focus on the antagonistic systems on either side of the Iron Curtain but on the ways in which individuals gave local meaning to large-scale processes of change.

An article based on parts of my PhD research was published in the Journal of Urban History in December , and a chapter in a peer-reviewed volume will appear in I am also the co-editor of an interdisciplinary volume on the history, culture and memory of socialist East Germany which was published in see featured publication. I have previously published on the tensions between personal memories and official histories of the East German State Security in the European Review of History 20 The University of Bristol will organise an orientation session for the participants to formally inaugurate the programme as well as city tour to help students orientate themselves.

At the end of the programme, there will be a farewell meal to which will be invited the key stakeholders who have worked with the participants over the previous three weeks. In addition, the University of Bristol will organise a few social and cultural outings, to be planned in collaboration with participants.

Participants will be housed in a University hall of residence near the main University precinct. Accommodation will normally be single-room accommodation but some students may have to share rooms.

All accommodation is University owned and managed, and includes laundry facilities, social and study spaces, and wi-fi and cable internet connections. Students have traditionally stayed in Hiatt Baker or Wills Hall.

Participants will be provided with a catering card for the University refectories for a pre-arranged amount per day. Travel and cultural events which are undertaken as part of the Institute will be covered by the University of Bristol. Please note that this is a city-based programme, and students will be issued with bus passes to enable to them to move around the city as part of their visits with various activists, community leaders and artists.

It can be physically demanding at time. In pursuing a prolific storyteller given to tall tales and changing names I have been forced to acknowledge the limits of what we can know as historians.

The book tries to recognise rather than conceal those limits. Serious historical analysis is mixed up with fragments of newspaper gossip, romantic fiction, and a screenplay. This has been my way of exploring how history itself is a kind of narrative — a way of telling stories with its own disciplinary codes and conventions.

At the moment I am juggling two book-length projects, both of which tease out questions around the politics and practice of cultural history and elaborate case studies I've touched upon in previous research.

Lured in by adverts promising social and professional success, they industriously read textbooks and completed worksheets — or, perhaps just as often, gave up on the course within days. It is a book about the global movement of psychological knowledge, ideas of personhood, advertising techniques, and corporate capital.

A notorious slum and cosmopolitan working-class neighbourhood, Seven Dials was apparently in a constant process of redevelopment between the construction of Shaftesbury Avenue in the s and the high profile battles over its conservation and regeneration a century later. In exploring this history, my starting point is the furore around a small cafe in Great White Lion Street in the mids.

Run by a Sierra Leonean man and his white British wife, the cafe is my prompt to explore how the encounters between metropolitan governance, corporate finance and property development, and diverse local actors shaped the transformation of urban society and culture. My earlier research explored the relationship between the city, social practice and sexual identities--how modern urban culture shaped the ways in which men and women experienced, organised and understood their sexual desires and practices.

I am also involved in a number of ongoing collaborative research projects.
