The book begins with a historical survey of the development of Portuguese cuisine, followed by a tour of the regional variations which are considerable for such a small country and then authentic Portuguese recipes for you to make at home. The next sections--with tips for shopping in Portugal's food markets, helpful phrases, an extensive menu guide, and a comprehensive glossary of ingredients, kitchen utensils, and cooking methods--are what you need to know when traveling in Portugal yourself.

    Don't miss the pork with clams, grilled sardines and grilled octopus, the many cod dishes, and all the lovely pastries. I was amused at the book's dedication to the Pasteis de Belem pastry shop in Lisbon, which inspired the publisher and co-author to create the Eat Smart series many years ago. I've been to Portugal several times, and the Pasties de Belem is always on my list of places to eat, so I was happy to see it featured here! The co-authors of this book know their subject well, and they'll definitely steer you in the most delicious directions when you're traveling through Portugal yourself.
