Tom Hanna, who recently bought a home here in Hendersonville, was in town working on the house and his brother John came to "help out" so both were taking a break to attend the picnic. Tom hasn't sold the Florida home so isn't here permanently, as yet. Leon Dedeaux came up from Anderson, S.

Hopefully they will become regulars at our gatherings now. Lola Fraunheim Jones came, sans Al, who was busy build- ing sets at our local little theater production. Priscilla Dunn and her family arrived with a co-worker in tow who turned out to be a former Diablo resident, Miriam Borromeo, daughter of John and Miriam Borromeo of Selah, Wash.

Her Dad was a Canal Zone policeman. I knew him when I worked at the Paraiso Health clinic and fellow policeman Ron Nessler worked with him so Miriam called him on the phone and several people talked to him. What a small world!!

Miriam had been working in Hendersonville for over a year with Priscilla and never knew there was a Panama Canal group here. Miriam was good friends with my son Jon. Mary Deheck and Terry Fuqua had planned to drive over from the coast but an impending hurricane kept them at home. Not to keep their house safe but to watch the protected nesting turtles along the beach. The eggs had not hatched and were in danger of being lost. I haven't heard whether or not they survived! What a charming area outside Washington, D.

They took us to the Manassas Battleground, which I loved, and to other historic spots in the area. They live in a beautiful nature reserve where Julie is the resident naturalist. She conducts nature programs for local school children and scout troops, etc. Part of the "graduation" test for night camps is walking from the camp- site down the road to a lake, listening to and identifying bird and animal sounds in total darkness; and I mean total dark- ness. Jon and Julie took us down the road and I think I put a permanent dent in Jon's arm, holding on so tightly. We could- n't see a thing!!

Picture below is Jon in his kitchen whipping up pina coladas for his Mom and favorite aunt. Not his usual "clowning around" but just as gratifying I'm sure. My daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Sam Trinca, took a mile 'bike" trip out to Sturgis. They visited some of the same places as Malcolm and Jean and when I asked Laurie if they saw them at Mount Rushmore she said she saw the faces of four VIPs but Malcolm wasn't among them.

Both couples agree that this United States is a beautiful country. They went to Gamboa, Summit, the beach, up to the Volcan and returned to the city and visited Fred's mom Olga, and his sister Sandra and husband Ponce. They ran into Gemma O'Donnell, who was visiting in Panama at the same time, and visited with other repats. Sad to say, Olga Watson passed away shortly after their visit. Lisa also visited a teacher friend in Panama who teaches at her school in North Carolina!

If we get our December issue before the 13th, and anyone is in the area, you are most welcome to join us. Call or email me for more info. Finally, our condolences go out to four families in our Hendersonville society group. Steve Thompson's mother Judy died in September.

Twenty-First Century Marianne Moore

Charles Latimer, both died in September. We will miss them all see With Deep Sorrow. During the past year they had been to Europe, cruising the Baltic and the Mediterranean seas, visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, England and the Mexican Riviera; all leading up to the road trip celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary. Chuck drove the entire trip and they arrived home on Tuesday, September 9th. He suffered a massive stroke on Thursday and died at PM Friday night--two and half hours short of his 84th birthday.

He will be sorely missed. Jon Hunt making pifia coladas Malcolm and Jean Stone took a three-week car trip to Montana and back to visit their son David and family. They babysat their two grandkids while David and Michelle went to Seattle to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. While there they also celebrated Jean's birthday, which for fear of potential bodily injury, I will not say which birthday. One hint tho'--it wasn't her "sweet sixteen. They visited a Shriner's Hospital in Lexington, Ky.

If I have forgot- ten anything, I apologize and will get it in the next issue. Call me or email me your happenings. Pat Hunt, Reporter e-mail: pathuntOl bellsouth. Where has summer gone? It seems like we only had a couple of weeks of summer here in the Pacific Northwest.

Lift Every Voice and Sing: The Quilts of Gwendolyn Ann Magee

Hopefully, we'll have a nice, B mild fall and an equally uneventful win- ter. According to the weather "guessers," Barbara Litchford there is no La Nifia or El Nifio this year which means a rather "bland" winter season I'm hoping. Mike found out, when he went to Panama last year with Coco, that both of his great uncles worked on building the Panama Canal and at least one was a Roosevelt Medal recipient. No wonder everyone kept saying "Hi Mike, how are you doing" at Coco's class reunion when he went to school in Washington State his whole life!!

The Hovts all look very much alike! August Bob and Mary celebrated another cousin's 96th birth- day, attended Aida at the Seattle Opera, and paid a visit to the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, where some of Bob's father's Marine Corps memorabilia is on display. In September they attended a local Pan Am retiree picnic where the retirees are getting fewer and older. Bob and Mary will be attending the 50th Anniversary ceremonies on October 11th for the Boeing They expect to see many of the fellow Pan Am alumni, a few of whom were present on the first scheduled New York-Paris flight on October 26, After those fun activities, Bob and Mary will wing their way to San Diego to visit with two of their great-granddaughters.

As usual, during their show they come right down Bob and Mary's street by Lake Washington at about feet. She underwent sur- gery on her back and then spent 10 days at Northwest Hospital's rehabilitation center where she was "treated" to rigorous Occupational and Physical Therapy to help her regain her strength and balance. She sure was glad to get home where she could rest.

After the wedding, Sean and Amanda will live in Lawton, Okla. Thanks for sharing your news Well my trip to Denver in August was beyond my expectations, what a spectacular place! In fact, if there was a sequel to the movie Tornado, we could have been extras on the set!

  6. So I passed another first--my first tornado and a lot of funnel clouds. Fortunately the tornado was not a serious one and only took off a few roofs further down the road. The weather also kept me busy in Homestead, Fla. There, preparing for "Ike" I learned how to put up hurricane shutters, thanks to our friend Ivan Klasovsky. We stocked up on hurricane supplies and made sure the tank was topped off in the car at all times.
