Under the Fan

Here's what you should know about sleeping with a fan on at night.
Table of contents

The first night I used my bed fan i wanted to test it out to the max. So I set it up as normal, with the top sheet nicely tucked in and around the fan. Then i added my duvet on top of that along with my comforter. I could not stop laughing when i turned the Bedfan up all the way and i was laying there in a cocoon of refreshing air.. The sheets, the duvet and the comforter..

I stopped laughing, turned it down and went to sleep. This thing can really put out if you need it. Not fancy, but it works like a champ. Since the very beginning in when we first started making our Bedfan, the original we have been building them in Texas. Our first production facility was actually in our garage in Snook Texas, a small town just outside of Collage Station Texas. My wife, children, family and in-laws all pitched in to make this dream come true.

Is Sleeping with a Fan On Actually Bad for Your Health?

Soon people started seeing the Bedfan on TV and reading about it in the news papers, on line as well as hearing radio interviews that I did. At that point it got to be really hectic in our garage. I would get all kinds of people helping out just to keep up with the catalogs and retailers. It was fun but we soon out grew that. Boerne is where we started and in a small house on river road. I spent many late night hours making prototypes and testing various designs. Boerne is also the town where my friends have an injection molding company called Bee Jay Molding.

It was with their guidance and patience that I took my idea and turned it into a reality. Still to this day we build the Bedfan in Boerne Texas, we do have to import a few parts from over seas but that is only because so many factories have closed up shop in the U. I made a promise that if I was ever blessed enough to have the opportunity to build a product that would help people, I would build it here, and do my part in keeping jobs in America. I have kept that promise and will always as long as God is willing to let me.

The Bedfan - conceived, designed, manufactured and built in Texas, always. We do all that we can to assure you that you are getting the highest quality possible. It is not uncommon for these units to last 5 or six years. But inevitably there will be some that can develop issues. Usually this happens in the first few months if its going to happen at all. When that happens we always replace the unit and make sure that you are satisfied.

We will do this for up to one year. After that year if you run into an issue with the Bedfan we will work with you to get the problems resolved. One way or another we will get you back on track. If your not happy, I'm not happy. Once you own a Tompkins Bedfan you are part of a family and we will be here to take care of you when ever you have a problem.

So rest assured, your satisfaction is my utmost desire and when it comes to making decisions, or taking the blame, The buck stops here. You are what keeps us in business, you are the most important person to us. Or, a fan constantly circulating very hot air won't actually cool you off; the hot air will eventually just suffocate or dehydrate you to the point of your demise. Fans can't cause hypothermia, though. They don't cool the air; they just circulate it.

And because no house is air tight, you can't suffocate from hot air or a lack of oxygen.

Where are your fans made ?

The issue of "fan death" was such a concern that, in , the Korea Consumer Protection Board issued a warning entitled "Beware Summer Hazards! The warning also attributed 20 deaths from fans in the years to [source: However, nobody has been able to confirm these deaths [source: Nevertheless, the belief persists even today.

How did this superstition begin? Some believe it grew from a s campaign to conserve electricity. Differences in air temperature will affect the density of air and can be used to induce air circulation through the mere act of heating or cooling an air mass. This effect is so subtle and works at such low air pressures that it does not appear to fit the definition of a fan technology. However, prior to the development of electricity, convective airflow was the primary method of inducing airflow in living spaces. Old fashioned oil and coal furnaces were not electric and operated simply on the principle of convection to move the warm air.

Very large volume air ducts were sloped upwards away from the top of the furnace towards floor and wall registers above the furnace. Cool air was returned through similar large ducts leading to the bottom of the furnace. Older houses from before electrification often had open duct grilles leading from the ceiling of a lower level to the floor of an upper level, to allow convective airflow to slowly rise up the building from one floor to the next.

Outhouses commonly rely on a simple enclosed air channel in a corner of the structure to exhaust offensive odors.

Exposed to sunlight, the channel is warmed and a slow convective air current is vented out the top of the building, while fresh air enters the pit through the seat hole. An electrostatic fluid accelerator propels airflow by inducing motion in airborne charged particles. A high voltage electric field commonly 25, to 50, volts formed between exposed charged anode and cathode surfaces is capable of inducing airflow through a principle referred to as ionic wind.

The airflow pressure is typically very low but the air volume can be large. However, a sufficiently high voltage potential can also cause the formation of ozone and nitrogen oxides , which are reactive and irritating to mucous membranes. Fans generate noise from the rapid flow of air around blades and obstacles, and sometimes from the motor. Fan noise has been found to be roughly proportional to the fifth power of fan speed; halving speed reduces noise by about 15 dB.

Standalone fans are usually powered by an electric motors , often attached directly to the motor's output, with no gears or belts. The motor is either hidden in the fan's center hub or extends behind it. For big industrial fans, three-phase asynchronous motors are commonly used, placed near the fan and driving it through a belt and pulleys.

Smaller fans are often powered by shaded pole AC motors , or brushed or brushless DC motors. Cooling fans for computer equipment always use brushless DC motors, which generate much less electromagnetic interference than other types. In machines with a rotating part, the fan is often connected to it rather than being powered separately. This is commonly seen in motor vehicles with internal combustion engines , large cooling systems, locomotives, and winnowing machines, where the fan is connected to the drive shaft or through a belt and pulleys.

Another common configuration is a dual-shaft motor, where one end of the shaft drives a mechanism, while the other has a fan mounted on it to cool the motor itself.

Fan death - Wikipedia

Window air conditioners commonly use a dual-shaft fan to operate separate blowers for the interior and exterior parts of the device. Where electrical power or rotating parts are not readily available, fans may be driven by other methods. High-pressure gases such as steam can be used to drive a small turbine , and high-pressure liquids can be used to drive a pelton wheel , either which can provide the rotational drive for a fan. Large, slow-moving energy sources such as a flowing river can also power a fan using a water wheel and a series of step-down gears or pulleys to increase the rotational speed to that which is required for efficient fan operation.

Electric fans used for ventilation may be powered by solar panels instead of mains current.

This is an attractive option because once the capital costs of the solar panel have been covered, the resulting electricity is free. In addition, electricity is always available when the sun is shining and the fan needs to run. A typical example uses a detached watt , 12x12 inch 30x30 cm solar panel and is supplied with appropriate brackets, cables , and connectors.

Because of the wide availability of 12 V brushless DC electric motors and the convenience of wiring such a low voltage, such fans usually operate on 12 volts. The detached solar panel is typically installed in the spot which gets most of the sun light and then connected to the fan mounted as far as 20 to 25 feet 6 to 7 m away. Other permanently-mounted and small portable fans include an integrated non-detachable solar panel. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about mechanical fans.
