The Story of the Giro d'Italia: A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Volume 1: 1909-1970

Has anyone heard of Giuseppe Enrici, the Giro winner who was born in Pittsburgh? Alfonsina Strada was the only woman who entered and unofficially finished a Grand Tour. And there was Giordano Cottur, who won a Giro stage in Trieste while guns blazed. Clearly, this is a story that had to be told and it's all in The Story of the Giro d'Italia.

Bill and Carol McGann have had their lives inextricably tied up with bicycles about as long as they can remember. Their first date was a bike ride. It gave a good background of the history of the Giro. A good read for anyone who follows bicycle racing. Witherell, Author, Bicycle History. In the interest of full disclosure, I too have an association with the McGanns--they are the publishers of my book "Bicycle History.

If only there were as many English-language books about the Tour of Italy as there are the Tour de France. The McGann's wonderful book is a major first step in that direction; now you can be the go-to Giro expert on your next club ride, and all it will take is the time to read this completely enjoyable book. Before I proofread the manuscript, I wasn't too sure it would even hold my interest, but the pages flew by, and I was left wanting more fortunately there will be a volume two. The only problem was that I read it too fast.

One or two chapters Giros per evening, perhaps. Of course all the great riders are present and accounted for, but the McGanns do something else--they include fascinating little asides about the race, for example, or how politics often played a roll in it. There are also the old photographs. There aren't a lot of them, but the ones there are probably aren't ones you've seen before. And last but not least, there's wonderful glossary which contains many Giro-specific terms that may surprize even the most avid tifosi bike racing fans.

I begged for this book. I pleaded with Bill to write this rather than another book about the Tour de France. When his enjoyable TdF books were completed he and Carol turned their attention to my beloved Giro d'Italia I think this is a better book as a result. No argument, the Giro's been my favorite subject for years and all the things Bill and Carol learned while writing The Story of the Tour de France they put to good use with this new book.

I can say I've read most everything in English ever written about this race as well as some of the Italian-language works and own more of these than I'll ever be able to read! If you enjoyed their TdF books, I think you'll really enjoy their enthusiastic recounting of the Giro d'Italia history though , I can't wait to read the second volume! McGann certainly knows how to write and keep the reader enthralled! This was the third book I have thoroughly enjoyed from Mr. McGann and am looking forward to the second volume on the Giro.

Highly recommend this book and any of his previous books. See all 6 reviews. There's a problem loading this menu right now. Get fast, free shipping with Amazon Prime.
