For one thing, Michael has several inner voices Mr. Also, the humor is pretty biting. I think that is why I had a hard time suspending disbelief at certain points.

See a Problem?

Once I got the hang of the thing, I raced through the book to see what would happen and was semi-disappointed with the cliff hanger ending. While I appreciate setting up a sequel and a series, I think a book should have at least a semblance of a proper ending.

Editorial Reviews

I laughed out loud at several points. Though I had a few minor complaints, I think this series and this author have promise. Michel Whyte is a character that is easy to sympathise with and although the events of the book not only border on the absurd but absolutely cross the line into full blown crazy, I got drawn into the narrative and finished the story in just a few sittings. James Earle McCracken has a good flowing writing style but his weakness lies in structure as the novel sometimes rambles and does not altogether comply with accepted plot formula. However, I do not find that this is to much of a drawback for the story as it is not that long and this structure fits well with the absurdity of the events described.

Rue de la Pompe: A Satiric Urban Fantasy

For readers who enjoy the absurd, such as Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita" or any of Robert Rankin's ramblings I would indeed recommend this book. I kept waiting for the 4 or 5 star book that others have described to jump out at me. Towards the end, I was just plugging through to get to the end and figure out what the heck had been going on througout the book.

I was disappointed to say the least. Yes, there are nicely written scenes, and some funny stuff. But plot is important, too, and this book lacked one that makes any sense. On the one hand, it was cheap on Kindle, but that's several hours of my life I'll never get back. A thoroughly enjoyable novel, masterfully written. Paris is the city we all wish to visit, but typically one is not prepared for the realities of the city given the enormous romantic legend built over the centuries.
