One person found this helpful. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. An intense book about the Author's experiences in World War Two. Absolutely my favorite writer. Most highly to be recommended. Van Der Post brings to life the intensity of betrayal and the emotional consequences of acceptance. Brutal conflicts during times of intense human suffering expose the the true nature of blind obedience to causes and honer when cultural differences collide in war. Redemption and renewal are explored in characters that display common human frailties combined with exceptional courage and sacrifice.

How has this book been out of sight for so long? Incredible story line that I have shared with many people over the past couple of months. The haunting inner turmoil of the WWII soldiers will never be far from my soul. Story telling at its finest. If you enjoyed the movie Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, you will love this book which inspired it.
Van der Post is a full-blown Jungian believer, as such this book, while compellingly written, relies on his interpretation of Jungian ideas at play in people's lives, specifically the war. The book and the movie are very different pieces, and both are perfectly enjoyable reads on their own. This author is so incredible in his descriptions, and he finds a way to describe complex emotions. It also makes me see beyond the moment and the action, to what is happening to the heart.

For the most part this is brilliantly written, the strong spiritual message all important but never overstated. The themes are complex, but at base describe the net of forces which oblige whole peoples, let alone inidividuals, to act in accordance with urges that seem stronger than themselves.

Lawrence, tortured and kept in the dark for weeks, understands this and it is this that leads him - much to the disgust of his ex fellow prisoners, to plead for Hara's life when he is due to be executed by the Allies.

In 'The Seed and The Sower' we have the story of Jaques Celliers, brilliant warrior, handsome, bold, a success at everything he does, who feels that at heart he is 'nothing'. His courage is in part despair, for he hopes that he will be killed in action. This sense of worthlessness dates from the time when he knows: The story follows the odd synchronicities in the relations between Celliers,his disabled brother always unnamed and the scapegoat springbok Stompie and what Celliers believes to be his duty in sacrificing himself for the other prisoners at the camp in Java.
I thought the only weak story to be 'The Sword and the Doll'. This is ironical, in view of the fact that it is Van der Post's attempt to incorporate the female perspective, but I have to say I thought that some of the opinions here border on the absurd. Overall, though, a brilliant book.

Unusually, the film version is as good in a different way. May 14, Patrick McCoy rated it it was amazing Shelves: Lawrence and realized through the Criterion extras that the film is based on the writings of South African author Laurens van der Post. Post is a fascinating character who had worked in Japan as a journalist and had some Japanese language knowledge so that when he was captured he could communicate with his captors better than most. He went onto become a celebrated traveler and writer.
This explains why Oshima choose a story written by one of Japanese captive who was somewhat sympathetic to the Japanese rather than a Japanese memoir or story. In addition I think Oshima saw elements of themes that he would pursue in his later film Taboo; how war brings men closer together with homoerotic undercurrents. There are three novellas in Post's collection, The Seed and the Sower I was surprised by how closely the screenplay followed the events of the book, I had thought that Oshima had taken several liberties to make the sexuality ambiguous, but it was already there in the novellas told from the point of view of the narrator, John Lawrence, and Jack Celliers.
I was also surprised by the almost mystical musings of the survivors of war and the lyrical prose: One single, lonely, inexperienced heart had to change first and all the rest would follow. Die skrywer se puik beskrywing van die bewegende trop bokke is meesterlik. Ek kan verstaan hoekom Ian Player en Van der Post goeie pelle geword het.

Lourens het verwoord wat Ian in sy binneste oor die natuur gevoel het. Werklik 'n vyfster boek! This is one of the best book I've read in a long time. Van Der Post has something really important to tell us in these three beautifully written novellas. The stories are recalled by two men who had been through the war and prison camp together when they meet again at Christmas time.
The episodes are set in a Japanese prison camp, in battle fields, and torture chambers--all places you would least likely expect to find love, compassion and brotherhood. The seed and the Sower is the kind of book that leaves you in a daze for a day or two after you are down reading it. Some themes are sure to hit close to home and the written is at times incredibly superb. It must be said though that some of the writing and formulations can be racists.

I discovered this book through my appreciation of the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence , which was a cult favorite among my friends back in high school. Although it's been a while since I've read it, I shall recount what I remember.

This book is actually three separate stories, each recounted during a blustery Christmas Eve after World War 2. Feb 05, Pauline Lindeque rated it it was amazing. Van der Post describes the world around him with such beauty. I read some passages twice to make sure that I did not miss it.

This is one of the most Beautiful and moving books I've read. I just wish I could own a copy of this Took me ages to get through this. Parts are brilliant, parts are mushy and incomprehensible. There are lines in this book that have stayed with me for decades.
