Obviously the very idea of an older, married woman carrying on with a youth almost by a decade her junior was too much for Hardy's prudish Victorian readership, so he suffered the usual accusations of immorality. The tower itself is an eminently romantic stage for a secret tryst, which Hardy makes the most out of, contriving to place his forbidden couple on the point of discovery and disgrace on several occasions.

This is a Hardy novel, so I don't think I give too much away by revealing that the plot is destined to keep them apart somehow or other, though not perhaps in the way you might have imagined from the original set of circumstances. Personally, I thought the resolution was all but perfect up till the very last page, which I would have discarded, leaving Swithin on the steps, not on the summit.

It took me a little bit longer to get through this book than it normally would The book was comprised of three parts: the first was an introduction to the characters and the plot, the second was where most of the controversy began, and the third was where the solutions began to happen. The third part was my favourite of the three because I It took me a little bit longer to get through this book than it normally would The third part was my favourite of the three because I thought it was the most interesting, but overall I found myself attached to the plot far more than to any of the characters.
I was constantly intrigued by what was happening to them, and how they were going to deal with their circumstances, but I was never really emotionally invested in any of them. I was originally going to give this book 3 stars, but then that ending had me legit almost in tears from laughter, like that is not at all what I expected. The detailed astronomy bits I could have done without, but overall this just seemed like your typical classic romance, which is why I originally intended to give it only 3 stars.

Thanks for the laugh, Hardy. Definitely closer to 4 stars than 3. The shock value of an ending was absurd that I actually laughed Two on a Tower is definitely not as good as Far from the Madding Crowd or Tess of the d'Ubervilles , but it was such a quick and fun read.
My dearest Thomas Hardy, you did it again. At first I did not know I was enjoying this book. Until the end. Too sad for a love like this. Too real for every real love. I really loved this novel Thomas Hardy about marriage and marital relationship, age difference, desires, science astronomy and scientific ambition, religion, and most importantly, society and breaking of social decorum, norms, and convention. I can't get over it. I'm still shocked by the ending.

Even though this is not one of Thomas Hardy's best, I enjoyed this book despite the corny story line of a year-old poor astronomer's budding romance with a year-old Lady. I love Hardy's writing. Though this book is a tragedy, I had to laugh at all the "close calls" where tragedy could have been averted if only the letter had arrived a few hours earlier or the hero hadn't left on the ship until one day later.
