This is a great end to a wonderful trilogy by Manfredi. I thoroughly loved his adaptation of historical fact to a novel. His writing style was very accessible and easy to read, which in my opinion, is the most important thing.

Antipolygamy Laws and Civil Disobedience

One of my favourite scenes is the scene of Alexander's companions saluting and standing by Alexander's decision which was a throwback to a scene depicted in the first novel. The scene underlies the role reversal that has taken place from when they first gave the Salute to a Young prince Alexander in the first book when they were fugitives from King Phillip to now where they were masters of their own destinies world. The other strength of the novel is the depiction of the changing landscape and the wonderment of the troops as they push the boundaries of the known world and travel towards the "Ends of the Earth".

The ending and the epilogue of the book is bittersweet and it seems that this objective of reaching the ends of the earth does prove to be an elusive goal. Overall, well worth the read. By the end of this journey it felt like Alexander a gifted climber , had put a leash on his cat his army , and proceeded to drag it up Everest.

Similar to most tales of trying to conquer the world, it was never going Listen to the ever-so-slightly-more-entertaining audio version here! Similar to most tales of trying to conquer the world, it was never going to end well. His demise reminded me of Coop in Wet Hot American Summer as he stepped in a bucket, slipped on a banana peel, fell in a kiddie pool, and then had the bucket land on his head. Well he had a good run! But a decent summation of the life and legacy of Alexander the Great. Really this is an adventure book about Alexander and homies.

His daddies friends Cleitus the soon to be killed, and the old war goat Parmenion. Leonnatus, the giant cleaver wielding Zangief. Eumenes, his wet blanket advisor. Nearchus, the salty seaman, har har har?

The Pillars of the Earth

Bucephelus, his roided up crossfit horse. Peritas, his weaponized Lassie. Craterus, Lysimachus, Perdiccas, Ptolemy, and Seleucas, all important homies in their own right. And of course, his bisexual bestie Hephaestion. Are Alexander and Hephaestion the inspiration for the ambiguously gay duo Ace and Gary?

Three hundred and sixty-five--one for each day of the year, each with their own entourage, naturally. I christen this city Alexandria! And this one, Alexandria by the sea! And here is Alexandria next to the rock that looks like a shoe! And this will be known as As I find the 5 star system a bit limiting, I like to use my arbitrary rating system SLIC which stands for story, language, ideas and characters on a 10 point scale.

Well done for making it this far! Jan 10, Fahim rated it it was amazing.

All The Ends Of The Earth by Bob Dufford, SJ

A very detailed and entertaining book about Alexander the Great and all his ups and downs and wars with various nations. The author did an amazing job creating meticulous scenes with great details. You won't get tired of reading it. The book is around five hundred and something pages, but it reads fast and smooth. It has 64 chapters, each one is short and interesting. So, if you like history and would like to get entertained at the same time. Find this book and start reading it. Fun and A very detailed and entertaining book about Alexander the Great and all his ups and downs and wars with various nations.

Fun and entertainment is guaranteed. It is impossible to geographically follow Alexander on his journey. You will need to return to the inizial three maps in the beginning of the book every 5 pages through the book if you want to keep track on where Alexander is heading. On top of that, several sites are not pointed out in the maps so even though one main purpose of this book is to follow Alexander on his journey, you lose his position quite often. The final volume of Manfredi's Alexander trilogy covers his life and journey from Egypt through Persia, all the way to India and back, until his untimely death.

Much like the second book, it's just a little too longwinded and the characters continue to be somewhat too bland and superficially drawn. And I'm just really not a fan of this "Alexander, supreme ladies' man" characterisation Feb 27, Scott Gardner rated it it was ok Shelves: historic. The third book follows the Great into Modern day India , and his fight to hold onto what he already conquered.

Overall , it was an ok read , a little too long in places , my big disapointment , is little is given into his death , and how the empire was left with his demise. There are some really great moments in this book, but they're eclipsed by the deluge of things that happen. This should have been two or three books, or some stuff should have just been left out.

Ends of the Earth (Alexander, book 3) by Valerio Massimo Manfredi

Glad to have read it in any case, but more for the subject matter than for the craft. Apr 11, Nicolae Tilivea rated it liked it. And rushed somehow. Apr 15, Vinayak Malik rated it really liked it. Mar 12, Rashmikanta mantry rated it it was amazing. He just became a hero in my life. Before reading this book, I felt like he is just a soldier and a good general. But after completing these books i felt like he is a adventure geek. I can feel why he is called Alexander , the great. I can understand the meaning of 'the great'after his name.

Except scenes, where I felt that Alexander has done the right thing, I felt for for his character.
