The imagery in the book was so vivid that I could feel myself back in that period, the oppressive heat, the exotic land, smells, filling your senses, the ever present fear of the people who in the course of living a totally ordinary life might find themselves accused of the most evil and vile associations with Satan, for decidedly unsaintly motivations. Food for thought, perhaps not much has really changed.
With a narrative reminiscent of an old Tyrone Power adventure film, readers get well-developed, sympathetic characters, a history lesson and exposure to exotic Asian culture. The Inquisition was a very black period and the Church was determined to rid their holdings of anyone they suspected as not a true Christian. If you like historical fiction this is a novel you should read. I look forward to reading more from this promising author. Navaratnas, Gemstones and the Cosmos. However, The Witch Hunter's Amulet by Marco Lobo successfully transported me back to the 16th Century and made me feel as if I was an integral part of the story, albeit a bystander. His I usually do not read historical fiction, mainly because it reminds me of History class in high school. His descriptive voice is magic and his characters, good and bad , convey depth and complexity.
The story opened my eyes to a period I knew very little about and helped me understand the fragility and torment of man's faith in a Church seemingly bent toward ungodly pursuits. Reading The Witch Hunter's Amulet has made me a convert to historical fiction, at least when it is written by Marco Lobo. I look forward to future installments.
