Dark Journey is a British spy film directed by Victor Saville and starring Conrad Veidt and Vivien Leigh. Written by Lajos Bíró and Arthur Wimperis, the film Music by: Richard Addinsell.

She and her incredible wardrobe are stunning but the closeups of her face, especially those Scarlet O'Hara eyes in the intimacy of black and white film, are really devastating. In Leigh is working under cover as a French double agent, using her chic dress shop to disguise her activities.
Conrad Veidt as Baron von Marwitz is as perfect for his role as Leigh is for hers. He has magnificent eyes and the camera, as in the case of Vivien, moves in close so they can draw you in. He is perhaps not handsome but thoroughly aristocratic in looks, elegant in an almost feline way. Until he smiles. It is not surprising that Veidt has been chosen to play the Joker.
I ran the film through a couple of times to see a scene in which he suddenly morphs into an all together different persona as he bares his teeth in a toothy grin. Of course he is not meant to be a bad guy in the film but the directors should never have had him smile when he is playing a decent man and a lover. Of course Madeleine and the Baron fall in love. An interesting aspect of the plot is that the Germans are pictured as being as decent as the Allies.
In other words the two enemy groups are conducting the war on a level playing field. At times the plot, though rather thin, gets confusing and both the audio and the video are showing their age, the picture being made in It is another era and its ethics and morality are a nice respite from the modern day. Intel adversaries who fall in love, yet choose to uphold their oaths to their respective countries. The wardrobe for the women in the film is not period correct Great cast in an entertaining film. Vivien Leigh combines strength, intelligence and beauty in the character of "Madeline", and Veidt fascinates, tracking from austere to smoldering in a heartbeat. With French, German, Swedish, and Swiss spies in the mix it is at times difficult to know who is spying on whom, but we are treated to some interesting examples of espionage "tradecraft" of the era along the way.

The print is lovely if a bit soft focus, with striking black and white photography especially in chiaroscuro effects achieved with the women's fashions in many scenes. The only redeeming qualities are the actor. I purchased the 'digitally remastered' version hoping it would be vastly improved over other 'regular' versions in circulation. Unfortunately the film quality of both versions are identical - poor-to-fair at best.
The only redeeming qualities are the actors and story line.
The 'digitally remastered' film is nothing like that. Don't waste your money.
Very disappointing!! Great movie! Fun wartime spy thriller and Vivian shines as usual, but this is a very low, cheap copy of the film. I had to get a replacement because at 43 min the voice and film were off sync very annoying it doesnt right itself untill 47min on both copies!! Conrad Veidt and Vivian Leigh deliver the most precious, subtly sensuous kiss that I've ever seen on film, a stunningly calm meeting of mouth and soul that suggests an exchange of the breath of life.
I watched the movie three times just to see the kiss.
