The entire group turned to face Maya. The sound of footsteps echoed in the corridor outside as they all waited for her to speak. Hamoonga was genuinely impressed. He smiled broadly at Maya as she fidgeted nervously with the hem of her dress. I mean, the copper mines are the lifeblood of our country. I think these are pretty clear: we have corrupt, incompetent leaders representing us at times. It is also a fact that the Chinese are not necessarily considering our best interests.

They need to play by ethical rules. Ken leaned back in his chair and lifted his arms in the air. Temwani rolled her eyes.

Ken was failing to impress. How are we to report on the loss of hospitals, schools, and other social services previously offered by government-run copper mines? How do we report on the massive influx of Chinese workers taking up jobs previously held by local Africans — and even including the menial jobs? Tell me, how should we report on the Chinese owners that mistreat African employees, underpaying them and overworking them? How can we cover stories of Chinese firms that plunder our natural resources and pollute our rivers and streams, disrupting our farms and making our children sick?

There were a few concurring nods. What about the impact on women? You see, the typical family in the copper-mining towns consists of a husband who works long shifts, his wife, and three or four school-going children.

Meeste Gelees

It is the women in this family who plays multiple roles: cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children and in most cases bringing in a second, supplementary income to sustain the household. She went on. If you can just speak to them, I think our message will be brought home. If you speak up, both the workers and the management will listen. I know they will!

Hamoonga stopped and turned to face the persistent Kalala. He was tired, it had been a long shift, and he could feel his lower back and shoulders aching. No amount of discussion, lobbying or whatever you want to call it will make any difference.

In this world you have the powerful and the weak; we, my friend, are the weak. How can a lowly mine worker stand up to the Chinese who are backed by big money and powerful politicians? Besides, what grievances or struggles are you talking about? However, a few hundred … a thousand mine workers will surely turn some heads! Between these two camps they have shared the spoils.

Book review: A Casualty of Power by Mukuka Chipanta

What we need to do is to ensure that we take what is owed to us; us the people! It was growing dark, an amber sunset was fading into the western horizon behind the large man-made hills of copper-processing waste. This policy shift, however, will reverberate far beyond the valley.

The time has come, from this point of view, for India to stop squandering its energies on the competition with its third-rate, failing neighbor. India has global interests, is courted by major powers like the United States and Japan, and is seen around the region as an indispensable counterweight to China. His initial efforts to engage Pakistan during his first term in office were not only rebuffed but lead to a spate of attacks and escalating artillery duels across the Line of Control. Modi and his advisers concluded that a wholly new approach was in order.

Power, precarity and white-hot anger: what I learned in a decade in journalism

India not only responded to Pakistan-based terrorist attacks with conventional military strikes in and February but focused its diplomatic efforts on isolating Pakistan internationally. The new Kashmir policy is consistent with that broader approach to Pakistan. The two neighbors have fought three wars over Kashmir and engaged in innumerable rounds of inconclusive diplomatic talks over it. That Pakistani core objective, of revising the status of the disputed territory, is now all but unreachable.

Indeed, India has gone even further to undermine Pakistani policy by renewing its claims on Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. These assertions do not portend an Indian military attack, but they do suggest an Indian attempt to reset the international narrative on Kashmir—that Kashmir is occupied and disputed on the Pakistani side, not the Indian. There are significant reasons to doubt the efficacy of this strategy.

At the outset, within the past few years, there has been a qualitative change in the insurgency in Kashmir. Contrary to its public protestations, Pakistan has evinced little or no interest in tamping down its support for several anti-Indian terrorist organizations ranging from the Jaish-e-Mohammed JeM to the Lashkar-e-Taiba LeT. Media reports suggest that, after an unusual months-long lull over the summer, terrorists have again begun to infiltrate over the Line of Control into Indian-controlled Kashmir.

That said, to the surprise of Indian policymakers a new generation of native Kashmiris have entered the fray. This was more than evident from the outpouring of public support that ensued in the wake of the killing of Burhan Wani, a young Kashmiri militant in July , who had a substantial following on social media.

His debut novel, A Casualty of Power , published in by Weaver Press, received critical acclaim for its depiction of the cultural tensions between Chinese immigrants and the indigenous workers in the Zambian copper mines.
