Some of Dave Barry's books are screamingly, laugh-out-loud funny. Others are just silly and juvenile. This is one of the lesser Dave Barry books; it's still amusing, in a juvenile and just plain silly way, but it's far from his best. This collection of Dave Barry's 21st century annual reviews, with his sort of history of the world prior to the year , aims its pointed humor at the absurd behavior of those who may take themselves just a little too seriously, and especially those who seem to think they can outwit the general public. While it may be true that an alarming number of Americans can be outwitted, you can be sure "the funniest man in America" won't be among them.
From suit-wearing talking heads on TV, to Martha Stewart who just wants to focus on her salad , to Al Gore and his status reports from earth , to most anyone connected to the Bush administration, like Dick, "Dick," Cheney , Barry massacres them all with his rapier wit.
He only spares the year because after the September 11 attacks "it didn't feel right to make jokes about the rest of the year and then either ignore the attacks or suddenly become serious. Dave Barry is timeless. I bought this book for my 24 year old son during his recovery; wasn't sure if he would enjoy it, given his age and growing up in today's video game over the top razzle dazzle entertainment world. He read it multiple times, loaned it out to his room mates, they loved it! Some of the references are dated Ronald Reagan ; but a little bit of history didn't hurt him.
He said he looked to see when the book was written, then it made sense and he got the humor. Good thing I was sitting down. It was one of the best books I've given him.
