The others, not so much. Marcus was presented as a perfect male specimen, which made him boring and unrealistic. Jah was probably the antithesis to Marcus, and his maturation throughout the book was unearned and unbelievable. K'wan's prose is clunky at times, but innovative at a lot of other times. Overall, I found the book eyeopening, amusing, and pretty good.

I'd recommend it to someone looking for something out-of-the-ordinary or a fresh, authentic perspective. Apr 05, Jasmine Tuttle rated it it was amazing Shelves: This book kept me on the edge the whole time I was reading this! I can't really relate to the lifestyle but i related to some of the people. I despised Rhonda she had a lot of growing up to do. My favorite character is Jah , I felt like i watched him grow up and mature i kinda fell in love with they him , They say the hoods don't have prince charmings but they never met Jah reguardless of how young and wild he was!

Apr 09, Blow Pop rated it liked it Shelves: Well most of them at least. It's fucked up to get a partner fucked up on drugs just so you can do a 'train' on them without their consent. And then everyone blaming it on them after the fact. I can't tell you how disgusting that makes me feel. While excessive, I'm glad that everyone who rap Content warnings: While excessive, I'm glad that everyone who raped Yoshi died. Far as I'm concerned it's exactly what they deserved though a few were very excessive.

I'm glad Yoshi and Billy got themselves partners that actually respected them for who they are not what they did for work. Yoshi especially because there's so much stigma against strippers. So much in fact that she internalised it and felt that way about herself.

I wouldn't say she'd get the worst parent ever award but she was a bad parent. The answer to your children acting up is not to abuse them. I'm not a parent but I've helped raise enough of other people's children that I can definitively say that. That's not to say I'm fully against hitting your kid if the situation calls for it and I use hitting loosely since barely touching your kid nowadays is considered hitting.

Swatting the back of their hand if they're reaching for something you told them they can't have or that might be dangerous hard enough to sting but not enough to seriously hurt. Sometimes a swat on the butt is helpful in a kid fully learning a lesson. When sitting them down and explaining doesn't work at least.

And her mom was no better in calling her daughter a whore when she told her that her boyfriend had sexually assaulted her and continuing to deny it ever happened even when the douche got put away for doing it to another young girl. It was a good book. Very emotional for me and kind of triggering cause of the rape issue but good. Feb 19, Courtney rated it it was amazing Shelves: My first timing reading K'wan and this will nt be the last this book had everything drama, action, and a realistic view of everyday life of 4 young twenty-something women.

Hood Rat Series

I've read this author's work before this but since then I've been an avid reader of his. Anything he writes, I will read and support. He's just that good. WOW, this was an interesting read! This was a page turner and I couldn't put the book down. There were so many characters and the author did a good job of weaving their stories together. There was so much going on in this book that there's too much to break down so I'll just say that it was a good read that I would recommend to others. Dec 05, Diane Rembert rated it it was amazing.

Four different women with four different issues. These men bring heat to the streets in their own unique way. I was skeptical but I actually enjoyed this one. It was entertaining and dare i say Sadly I've come across every single type of woman portrayed in this novel. Set in the area of Harlem, it instantly dives into a world that may be familiar to some, but not so familiar to others. The characters themselves are also very strong as well, with a rich and varied supporting cast, all managing to resonate with the reader. With a group of different people all circulating within each others spheres of influence, they work at playing off each other well.

Shaking things up in Harlem, these four friends have a bond unlike any other, something which the neighborhood has never quite seen before. What lengths will Yoshi go to get what she wants? Where will their journey take the rest of them? Just who is the hood rat? Continuing on from the previous novel, this presents a new picture of life on the streets, this time taking place in Brooklyn. Originally published in on the 2nd of October, this installment came out a year after the first, once again published through the Macmillan publishing label.

Taking what worked in the first novel and building upon it, this book manages to capture all the vital elements, such as tone and atmosphere, and develops them even further. Taking place in the streets of Brooklyn this time, as opposed to Harlem, this moves not just the setting, but the action forwards too. Whilst the ambiance is somewhat similar to the previous novel, allowing the reader a sense of familiarity, it manages to craft a whole new environment and a whole new set of problems.

Drawing upon the real world setting of Brooklyn, it manages to craft a highly realistic portrayal of the area in both style and tone. With a rich cast of characters once again, it tells of their struggles dealing with the area, each one with their own specific goals and desires. Meanwhile True has made it big as an artist with the release of his first album, but then his past comes back to haunt him as somebody wants him dead. Will Dena ever be able to make it out, and can True survive his past? Can Jah and Yoshi ever make it as a couple, or will their relationship be taken out of their hands?
