It was a thought-provoking article, as I knew it would be. Rand talked about original sin, morality, To mark its year anniversary, Playboy magazine which I don't normally support!

Rand talked about original sin, morality, free will, reason, the central purpose of life, emotions, hedonism, self-esteem, her philosophy of objectivism, self-sacrifice, the symbolism of the cross, absolutism, laissez-faire capitalism, the individual, collectivism, National Review, conservatism, conspiracy, ideas, dictatorships, censorship, altruism and greatness.

That was a lot to pack into one interview!

As always, she spoke clearly and confidently in her views. I found this quote interesting keeping in mind that Rand viewed faith as the "negation of reason" : Now you want me to speak about the cross. What is correct is that I do regard the cross as the symbol of the ideal to the nonideal. Christ, in terms of the Christian philosophy, is the human ideal.

He personifies that which men should strive to emulate. Yet, according to the Christian mythology, he died on the cross not for his own sins but for the sins of the nonideal people. In other words, a man of perfect virtue was sacrificed for men who are vicious and who are expected or supposed to accept that sacrifice.

If I were a Christian, nothing could make me more indignant than that: the notion of sacrificing the ideal to the nonideal, or virtue to vice. And it is in the name of that symbol that men are asked to sacrifice themselves for their inferiors.

That is precisely how the symbolism is used. That is torture. Later in the article the interviewer asks her about self-sacrifice and whether she would step in front of a bullet for her husband. Her answer: It is not self-sacrifice to die protecting that which you value: If the value is great enough, you do not care to exist without it. This applies to any alleged sacrifice for those one loves.

Funny, she couldn't make the same connection to what Christ did for us! He basically did step in front of a bullet for us because He loves and values us.

But she failed to see it and the interviewer never pointed that out to her, either. Still, it was an intriguing interview. There are so many points of hers that I can agree with, even if she would consider my faith irrational. Dec 16, Luke Crawford rated it really liked it.

Not the most entertaining playboy interview i have read, but that is l likely because I have read a lot of Rand in the past, and this is, well, something of a cliff's notes. I'm not saying you should adopt her philosophy, but you should certainly understand it, considering how influential she is in American politics. Apr 14, Robert Harrison rated it it was amazing.
