Developed in partnership with Argo AI, Ford's vehicles use a complex laser technology called Lidar to generate spatial information for the car's navigation system. Similar to a radar system, lidar sends out a laser light and measures small differences in the speed and angle of the light that's reflected back from the environment, as reported by VentureBeat. Those measurements are then used to generate information about surrounding vehicles and objects. Predictably, the biggest challenge for the sensors aren't parked cars or irresponsible drivers but insects, which can end up smashed against the lidar sensors and throw off their readings.

A new story from Consumer Reports describes how Ford and Argo have devised a clever set of weapons to help keep the lidar system bug-free and the cars safely cruising on toward their destination. It starts with the tiara, the name for the lidar housing that's mounted on the roof of the car. Ford's vehicles use a complex laser technology called Lidar to generate spatial information for the car's navigation system.

The tiara's first line of defence is a small nozzle that shoots a constant stream of pressurized air across the sensor lens, ensuring that bugs and other road debris are pushed away before they get close. There's also a system of 16 spray nozzles that emit a soapy fluid across the lens housing to wash away anything that makes it through the air shield.

Lidar systems have been the source of some criticism in the self-driving car industry.
