Sometimes the clutter and dirt can get overwhelming in a busy life. There is the temptation to throw money at the problem by hiring a maid service to keep the house clean. But by doing your own housework, you actually see where you have organization problems and can begin to find creative solutions to the clutter or disorganization in your home.

Wear used clothes — everyone does. Do your clothes shopping at Value Village, a charity thrift store or a local free store. You will find unique clothing for your nonconformist image, and save money. You can look beautiful on a budget. Trade child care with a friend. This works best if your children are the same age, or if you can offer a valuable service that your friend needs — trading child care for homemade bread, or hair styling, for instance. Insure your second vehicle only when you really need it. Does your household run with two vehicles.

Consider insuring the second vehicle only for the season that its needed. Make draft stoppers for your home and use them to reduce heating costs in the winter. Draft stoppers can be as simple as a rolled up towel across the bottom of a door or as elaborate as a stuffed snake or a stuffed cat with a long tail.

Even if you heat with wood, by reducing drafts you can reduce the temperature that your stove has to burn at, saving on wood use. Go for a walk, jog, ride a bike, or snow shoe instead of paying for the gym or pool membership. Go with a friend or family member and enrich your relationship while exercising. Cancel your cable TV.

Do you really need a hundred channels? Do you really need to watch the news? Are there other ways that the need for current news, sports and entertainment can be met? By cancelling your cable you will realize a significant savings. Buy books online rather than at a bookstore. In many cases you can flip through the online book to get an idea if its what you were looking for, before you buy. Get a Kindle or other ebook reader and take advantage of the thousands of free e-books available in your areas of interest. My homeschool students were delighted reading historical fiction by G.

Several times I looked into purchasing a complete set of G. Many other classic books are available for free or for only a couple of bucks. If you are a reader or you are homeschooling consider getting a Kindle of your own. Date night for free. Spend time with your spouse doing things that you both enjoy. Be creative and find things to do that are free or cheap — a picnic at the lake, a hike or a walk, do a puzzle, play a board game, watch a movie and discuss it. Hammers, pruning shears, scissors, tape, can all get lost in the clutter. Savings for staying organized: Family Night for free.

Your kids and grandkids want your time and attention. It is no substitute. Take the time to play with your kids. Spend time with them. Make a pizza together. Get to know them. It will pay dividends later. And save you money today. Close off unused rooms in the winter. By keeping the door to bedrooms closed, you save on heating costs.

Switch to full spectrum LED lights in rooms that you frequent. By using full spectrum lighting you reduce the need for special SADD lighting, and improve your mood and energy levels. Compact florescent lights save energy costs, but have mercury vapour that can escape the light bulbs even when turned off. LED light bulbs are brighter than CF bulbs and use even less energy. Yes, they are initially more expensive but the prices are already coming down. Switch to wood heat. We purchased a wood heating stove in our first home to replace an oil burning furnace.

The wood stove paid for itself in the first year of use. Turn down your hot water heater. We have our hot water set at F in order to wash wool. In the winter, when our hot water is supplemented with water from the wood cook stove reservoir we reduce the temperature on the electric hot water tank to F. Save up for big purchases rather than putting them on credit. By paying cash, you can often get a reduced price on a big purchase, like a car.

At the very least you will reduce your credit card debt by paying cash. And it will feel so good to be driving around without thinking of the car payment that is due next month. My friend is hooked on Groupon. Spending money can be a substitute for facing your pain. But it creates more pain when your debt rises.

Many communities have a barter club, where members exchange services and products for a fee, being able to take the same value from other members. Or set up a more informal exchange one on one. Most of us have a stash of stuff that feeds our hobbies. Sometimes this stash gets out of hand, requiring more and more boxes and space to store it. Stop adding to your stash and begin to plan projects that use it up.

Your stash is a great place to find the ingredients for your gift giving. How much will you save if you put a moratorium on stash building for the next 3 months? Buy used books instead of new. Many books currently being sold online as new, are available in used editions from abebooks or amazon. Before you buy new, check out the used options. Accelerate Your Payments to Pay Off Debt Faster Making smaller payments more often is a strategy that pays off big time when paying off a mortgage. Track Your Expenses Make tracking your expenses fun for the whole family by setting up a challenge. I'm married because it's the legal way to be with the love of my life, Ana, who I met in Ecuador 15 years ago.

But, if you and your soul mate already share the same citizenship, you can simply spend your lives together — without a government permission slip otherwise known as a marriage license. Plenty of articles tout the tax advantages of marriage. But some people believe marriage is obsolete , and there are financial disadvantages of marriage, like these: And if you're going to spend your life with someone anyhow, the financial advantages of marrying may outweigh the disadvantages.

Or maybe not — it all depends on your particular plans and circumstances, and it's your choice. Animal companions are a wonderful — but expensive — responsibility. What if you love animals, but don't want the toyear financial obligation of a pet? Instead, consider one or more of these options: If you have an unconventional life and variable income, financial responsibility is the key issue with pets.

After all, a decent person won't abandon a pet because of a little financial difficulty. On the other hand if you spend even twice as much on animal causes instead of owning a pet, you're financially safer. Without direct responsibility for the animals, you can more easily stop expenditures when you need to. I don't participate in the frenzy of Christmas activities my friends and family enjoy or tolerate. Unless you really enjoy spending a fortune on Fourth-of-July fireworks or other holiday traditions, say no to those, too. If you enjoy Christmas lights, drive around town to see them instead of buying any.

If you like fireworks, watch the ones your tax dollars paid for. Or, just do something else fun and interesting. Take it from me — you can enjoy the holidays without the expense of doing what everyone else is doing. Part of being a nonconformist is choosing new perspectives, like pricing things in terms of time worked.

But you'll also pay annual licensing, insurance, repairs, maintenance and operating costs. Those can double the time-price over the first five years , bringing it to hours, or over 21 weeks of work. But the exercise can change your mind about what you thought you wanted.

It's also useful for comparing options, which brings us to the flip side of this perspective…. Have you ever heard people regret the lack of time spent with their children? Maybe it's because they choose to spend money elsewhere instead of to buy time with kids. Time is the stuff of life and money can buy it. Maybe morning lattes and the newest iPads are what you value more — and there's nothing wrong with either of those options!

The choices are yours, but considering them from other perspectives helps you make them more consciously. After all, some people are healthy and productive at age 88 while others are disabled and unable to work at And who wants to wait until old age to relax or do interesting work that doesn't produce income? For example, if you plan to quit a job, first save enough money to delay the necessity of a new paycheck for a year.

Or, if you know you'll be laid off in a few months, work overtime to build up a mini-retirement fund. Of course, it always helps if your expenses are low, which brings us to…. You can cut discretionary expenses, like restaurant meals, vacations, shopping for non-essentials and going to the movies, as needed. Don't worry about these unless they're interfering with other goals.
