This is the American English definition of how the other half lives. For Augusta, Julia is more than just her twin sister. They share everything, until Julia will not discuss something that happens on a rare family trip abroad to Spain. Parfait only manages to convince his youngest brother, Zion, to accompany him on his epic trek to Europe, leaving his remaining two brothers and friend, Spanish priest Victor, behind.

Spain becomes the dream destination for them both. Augusta fell in love with Spain on her holiday there with her parents and Julia. She learned the Spanish language, studied the literature at university, and could barely wait to get back there. He and Zion walk from Burundi to Morocco over kilometres by plane!

After the long arduous trek across most of Africa, Parfait believes that the tiny strip of water — seemingly no bigger than a river on the maps — should pose no problems. Unfortunately, as everyone who has seen the news stories about the migrants drowning as they attempt the crossing knows, Parfait is very much mistaken. While there are few details of the walk, the boat trip across the Mediterranean is covered fully. As you read it, you are willing their tiny boat forward. They must reach the Spanish shore safely, and be able to claim asylum.

There is death and loss in this book a lot of it , but also love — for family, friends and partners. And there is flamenco — more a spiritual experience than just a dance. The two main characters are well developed and invite your empathy. I enjoyed reading this book, and in places loved it.

It makes you really think about what causes people to up sticks and leave their county, and how much they actually know about what awaits them. Desperate hope rather than reality guides many refugees. But could you honestly say that you would not want to have the courage of Parfait to do what he did, if you were in a similar situation? I am torn between 4 and 5 stars for this book — it lost me a bit in the middle, but it concluded beautifully.

She says things that are pointed and well But others who like to be less forthright - like her parents, squash her down. Her sister Julia, the good one, supports her with love. I liked Augusta, she sees things as she grows up with honesty.

Her poetry is raw and sometimes made me laugh. She could almost be described as counter cultural. Burundi a small oppressed country in Africa obsesses her. She loves new words and enjoys the Augusta Hope is a twin - an outspoken twin growing up.

Parfait grows up in Burundi and suffers from the troubles that abound in that country. He looks with longing outwards, and Spain very much appeals to him as a land of freedom and peace.

He wants to walk through Africa and cross into Spain. Through him we witness the horror of living in Burundi. Eventually he will leave, what happens to him then? There is a sombre tone to this book, it is different to what I usually read, yet in a way it has a lot to say about life, death, loss, love, family, community.

Its about how lives cross and choices are made. This story grew on me, its insightful, informative and ultimately hope filled. The way that she thinks is seen as odd by everyone around her, her mother seems not to know what to do with her and her father is embarrassed by her.

Augusta feels really quite alone, but she has a twin sister, Julia, who is always there for her. As they grow the siblings naturally grow apart, mainly because of a boy that Julia falls for.

Gradually, Augusta Hope worked her way under my skin, there was a lot to love about her and I think that I wanted to be her friend. Another book that made me feel like this was Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and I am sure that Augusta Hope will get compared to Eleanor Oliphant, as they both feature a quirky main character who is isolated and considered strange by many around them.

Part of The Other Half of Augusta Hope is set in Burundi, a small country in Africa that Augusta decides is to be her favourite country in the world and so she devours facts and learns everything that she can about the country. We also hear from Parfait, a young boy living in Burundi who at first seems quite random, how will he fit into the story? Of course, it soon becomes clear. Some of this book is set in a small town in England, some is set in Burundi and the rest in Tarifa in Spain.

By the time the book finished, I was totally in love with the story and the characters and I did not want it to end. It was beautifully written and it all felt so real. Augusta reads the dictionary for fun and couldn't be more different from her twin sister. Studying the globe and the names of all the countries, Augusta decides Burundi has the "My parents didn't seem the sort of people who would end up killing someone.

The alternating chapters are expertly linked and connect well despite the characters living disparate lives. This is a coming-of-age story and Augusta yearns to leave Hedley Green and live the life of a gypsy she reveres in a book of fairytales. Family tragedies complicate matters as Augusta navigates her way through life as best she can. Parfait is also struggling and wants to escape the bloodshed in Burundi with his siblings to Spain.

Spain features quite heavily in this contemporary novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed the focus on words and language by both characters throughout the story. Augusta is her own character and while highly intelligent, she is able to socialise well with others. There are no comical social faux pas here. This is a story about the dynamics of family, the love between siblings, suburban life and a middle class upbringing in England. It's also about the meaning of home, tragedy, grief, regret, loss and love. I simply loved this clever and wonderful book. For me, it had a little bit of everything; from hope, love, humour and joy to loss and sadness.

Joanna Glen has written this novel so beautifully and with a lovely lightness of touch which made even the most sombre parts of the book easier to digest. I smiled and laughed and shed a few tears I simply loved this clever and wonderful book. Dec 21, Charlotte rated it it was amazing. So funny, unique, silly - yet also devastating and poignant. I'd recommend this to anyone. Places which are so full of feeling you hardly dare return to them. I wonder which place it is for you. Upon completion, events remains with you and the significance of the message grows stronger. This book will grow on you as it is clever Very sad. She is a logophile - a lover of words - and is always asking questions.

The story of his journey will break your heart, as indeed, both Parfait and Augusta experience life changing occurrences. Words of wisdom literally fly off the page in a highly unique yet beguiling way. The range of topics she fears not to embrace - plight of refugees and postpartum depression, to name but two - is full of courage.
