Deaf Provision

These devices enhance the sound quality in noisy classrooms. This may be appropriate when a child requires adaptation in teaching style in order to access the information. Using visual aids, asking questions to check comprehension, or assigning a buddy for activities are ways to adapt for children with hearing needs.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in the Classroom

Most teachers are glad to have a professional consultant to give them even more suggestions. Some children who are deaf or hard of hearing prefer to stay in their neighborhood schools with their friends, even if learning in the mainstream classroom takes some extra work. Some students may need some extra tutoring to ensure success in the mainstream.

Such services are often provided as individualized instruction, perhaps outside the classroom "pull-out". The tutor can practice new vocabulary, introduce new topics, or fill in background knowledge that other children already know.

This school was set up to offer those from the Mid-West region education from pre-school to post primary level.

It has been in existence for over 25 years. These units are located in various schools around Ireland. They may have only a few deaf children enrolled at any given time.

This list does not cover all Deaf units around the country. It is understandable for a parent to not want to send their child to a school that is far away from their home and it is for this reason that they may opt to enrol their child in a local mainstream school. Mainstream education means the deaf or hard of hearing child is integrated into a classroom of hearing children.

It can be challenging for a deaf child to be in a mainstream setting where there can be more than 20 hearing students and they may not get the extra attention from the teacher they require. There may be a need for additional support in the form of a Special Needs Assistant SNA or a Visiting Teacher who regularly has one-to-one sessions with your child.
