Sucking Up Yellow Jackets is a luminous memoir that shows the power of love, the strength of family, and the courage of a mother who deals with Max with humor and wit and wisdom as they all try to muddle through a challenging life together. The writing is crisp and the memoir reads like a well-crafted novel. The book really makes you feel for the families and children who must cope with these conditions, and reveals the depths of hardship and bizarre moments that Aspergers can manifest. Best of all, the author's wry view of life makes us all see the wacky moments and the humor in the day to day. And it's humor, in the end, that saves them all and finally leads Max on to a life well lived.

Mental disabilities and autism are so widely known now and if most people are not understanding about, they at least recognize the difficulty of raising a child with autism. Taking place in the 's, the rule seemed to be Make them Behave with a good Beating! I truly felt for the author and her struggle to raise her family and deal with a husband who was non supportive and not a partner.
I cringed at her passiveness sometime This was an uncomfortable read for me although absolutely fascinating. I cringed at her passiveness sometimes and wanted to shake her and tell her not to settle. She was a prisoner of her time, societies expectations, and her own need to be loved. Having to deal with a child like Max seemed to be like having a foreign speaking child who could not understand reasons for rules no matter how many times it was explained. But as I read on, it became clearer with every page, that "sucking up yellow jackets" meant to deal with difficult situations no matter what. As much as the son Max is an interesting person, I liked the Mother cum narrator's character more. This is a true story, apparently, of a woman struggling with a patriarchal, conservative American era of the s. Many aspects of wom This book surprised me. Many aspects of women's rights and liberties were brought into the picture, though a bit over-shadowed by the story of her autistic son, Max.

This was a great book, written by a mother about her son, an un-diagnosed Aspberger's child, growing up in the 's. She describes the difficulty in raising him and how his behaviors affected the entire family. She is candidly honest about her feelings towards him, which were not always motherly love.
She was also in a terrible marriage and struggling to find her own identity in a time when women were not supposed to have one. I definitely recommend this book! Sep 27, C. Hard to believe this is a memoir. Deals with a family who was tested daily by an Asperger's child who may well be a genius but whose obsessions include fireworks, motorcycles and eventually explosives. You can't make this stuff up. It was a quick read and I loved the characters. Whenever my kids are driving me crazy all I have to do is remember everything she went through and I'll feel much better about my current problem! I was concerned it would be a depressing book because it dealt with a child facing the challenges of aspergers, however it was truly a fun book to read.

Obsessed with explosives and motorcycles, he spent more time in police stations and court than an incompetent bank robber. ER doctors knew him by name. Sucking Up Yellow Jackets is a touching, bizarre, sometimes funny story about the toll undiagnosed Asperger Syndrome took on Max and his family before the syndrome was recognized.
