If Timothy and Titus are paradigms for elders then there would appear to be two offices or at least two very different duties within the same office. A man who works hours and is a ruling elder on the side is going to have a difficult time using Timothy or Titus as a paradigm.
Some of this is implied in I Timothy 5: My point is that whether you call a position "Three office" or not, if you use Paul, Timothy and Titus as your paradigm there is going to be at the very least a functional difference between the man who devotes himself full time to the ministry and the ruling elder. I do not think Strauch addressed this issue very carefully or clearly. By focusing on the passages that just specifically address elders, he left a lot of relevant passages on the cutting room floor. Alexander Strauch has written a solid treatment of elders as they were meant to be by the Bible.
At least half the book is exposition of Scripture texts related to elders - a real strength. You need a team of multiple elders who are humble servants who can teach and apply Scripture to the flock in a caring and truthful way. I can see this book being a God-send to Baptist or non-denominational congregations that begin to realize they should have elders and wonder where to start. It feels like the o Alexander Strauch has written a solid treatment of elders as they were meant to be by the Bible.
He has a chip on his shoulder against educated pastors being distinct from elders. That can lead to professionalism and the pushing aside of elders doing their shepherding work, but the education is needed, and the distinction should be noted officially in the body 1 tim 5: His fixation with not having lone pastors could be very discouraging to pastors in small churches with little other leadership, or it could keep a formally educated elder from feeling he has something important to contribute to the elder team.

Our church is in the process of transitioning to elders. Our pastor encouraged us to research for ourselves the biblical justification for eldership, which is what led me to this book. Strauch lays it out clearly that eldership is in fact biblical and provides scripture to support his claims.

My chief criticism would be he tends to overstate his case and make claims I'm not entirely sure are accurate especially as it relates to the early church and eldership. He clearly explains what the Bible says about qualifications and expectations of elders. This is not a practical book. It is not a book about how to be a better leader. This book is strictly exegesis on the scriptures related to Eldership. The author goes through the greek and hebrew, cultural context, and historical understanding.
There is times I had to read this book as a pre-eldership requirement. There is times where sentence structure and tense of verbs are crucial to understanding the passage. The author also address issues of today's cultural practices of eldership and why how they go against scripture. He does a great job of thoroughly explaining disagreements and expounding on scripture.
As an elder-candidate, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My college experience was in education not in pastoral ministries. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know about Biblical Eldership because the book lives up to the title. Jun 07, Jason Vallicott rated it it was amazing.

Biblical Eldership is a thorough exegete of the Biblical texts on Eldership. Today many elders function more like a board of directors leading a company than they do as those called to live like Jesus, teach sound doctrine, and refute false teaching. Any elder or aspiring elder who reads this book will walk away with a sharpened conscience and a clear understanding of their weighty responsibility as leaders in the Church. I thought this book stands above the average book on eldership by being repetitive but not in a bad way. I like how he points out Acts 20, 1 Tim. A much needed overview of what the Nat elder should look like in the Church today. The ineffectiveness of the modern western church can in part be attributed to the lack of understanding of biblical eldership.

Excellent and comprehensive work on the subject that was a joy to read. You will leave this book with an understanding of the office and in my opinion convinced that a plurality of elders is the ideal way a church should be lead.

An important work, but over-hyped concerning its exegetical information. Mostly word studies with other exegetical and syntactical issues scattered throughut.

The best thing I can say about this book is that it got me to go back to the Scriptures and find a firm conviction on how we "do" church leadership.

So defining eldership is very simple when you think about it — we know what their roles and responsibilities are and we know the terms that are used for them Elder, Overseer, Bishop, Pastor, Shepherd. But in so doing, we have shorted the church of others who fit the description of elder or pastor, who are qualified as elder or pastor, and who are gifted as elder and pastor by determining their position by their paycheck.
In many cases in the New Testament, the elder was bivocational or secular in his vocation, but he was still an elder in the church. But, inadvertently, it leads to the second problem because they want to maintain a system of checks and balances, so they form committees or boards to keep the eldership in line. But by doing so, they miss out on the incredible blessing that comes with true Biblical eldership. When having this discussion, the greatest fear is a loss of control. People want to know, what about the congregational model we see in certain parts of the New Testament?
How does that fit together with eldership? Over the next few weeks, we will continue to work through scripture and argue the merits and benefits of eldership, as our church moves toward it. The Problem of Eldership in the Modern Church Biblical Eldership has become a lost doctrine and art in the 21 st century church of America for many. While I want to give you plenty of opportunity to read it for yourself, he lays out the first problem with an illustration.
The illustration is that of a church he walked in…on the front wall was a set of pictures forming a pyramid. At the pinnacle of that pyramid was the senior pastor, underneath were the associates, and underneath them were the rest of the staff; hidden down the hallway were the pictures of the elders… Now he drew a different conclusion about the problem than I did.
The effects of such a decision are very difficult on a pastor and his family, as well as the church. Further, when that person is removed from his position no matter how good or bad the conditions , it leaves the church with a feeling of paralysis. On the pastor, it creates an unhealthy environment for him and his family. To counter balance this, in some churches the deacons have taken up a governing role — which is not their scriptural role.
