Oct 01, Kelly rated it liked it Shelves: Depending far too much on the characters to carry the weight of the book, the story falls flat. Instead of exploring the origins of the Hunters and Gathers and how exactly they came to be, the story fades into the background. The reasoning of exactly what purpose the colony serves is never explored, leaving me with plot holes the size of Texas.

The outline of the story is just that, an outline. Instead of fleshing out the point, and it pains me to say this, it focuses too much on the characters interaction. All of the places we visit in the book are described just enough so that you get a feel for the location, but not enough to actually see it. The pace stays loyal to the story, keeping a constant speed throughout.

On one hand, he writes brilliant characters, keeps the dialog sharp, and his scenes realistic. On the other hand his descriptions are bare, his framework faulty, and his delivery fails to satisfy even the smallest of appetites. Finally, we have come to the best part of the book — the cast. Bitterly sarcastic, I loved these characters. Their interaction is genuine and their perspectives are easily identifiable.

Although he needs work on his pacing and plotting, when it comes to characters, M. Dan rated it really liked it Jan 14,
