"Hier encore", whose original French title translates as something like "Just yesterday" or "Not It was subsequently released in English as "Yesterday, When I Was Young", in Italian as "Ieri Si", in Danish as "Hvor tiden går", in Japanese 帰り来.

It worked out well for Herbert Kretzmer, though. A decade or so later, he went to see the West End impresario Cameron Mackintosh to talk him into reviving an old Kretzmer musical from the Sixties, based on The Admirable Crichton. Cameron wasn't interested, but asked Herbie what else he'd written. And, when Herbie mentioned the English lyrics to Aznavour's songs, he wasn't aware that the producer had a big French musical all ready to go except for the pressing matter of an English libretto.

There's no reason why a fellow who can adapt Charles Aznavour should be any good with Victor Hugo, any more than a Frenchman who's worked with Petula Clark would be your go-to guy for Jane Austen. But it was close enough for Cameron Mackintosh, and it all worked out. So that's my tip of the hat to the anglo side of a great French troubadour, via an American hit that's become a kind of standard and a British Number One that I hope will do the same. Aznavour wrote "Hier encore" as he was turning forty, and as he turned sixty and seventy and ninety the connection between singer and song deepened.

Something similar happened with "She". Two songs about the impermanence of life and love became profound and moving meditations on them. He and Herbert Kretzmer made an odd couple, the hollow-cheeked diminutive Armenian-Frenchman and a tall, dapper South African Londoner. But I didn't know how odd until a few years back, when Herbie revealed en passant on the BBC that the she of "She" was a Geordie, from north-eastern England. And so there was. Charles Aznavour played the game well, and understood its vicissitudes, and he lived a life with nine decades of amazing yesterdays.

I'm only playing catch up with the "Song of the Week" now, and only a third the way through when I read there was a song titled "You Let Yourself Go.

I'm so glad I hung in there to the very end. A very nicely explained story with oodles of details about how these two beautiful songs came to be. Paraphrasing Kertzmer about the sound of music as being about capturing of something as elusive as a sound that suggests a word from which a lyric emerges, somehow reminds me of releasing beautiful butterflies! I so much enjoyed this, I nearly forgot how i've let myself go. Merci beaucoup, Mark! Coming up on 50th Wedding Anniversary and working on the letter to give to her on the 50th Year.

No Love Lost or melancholy. Going for the Gold, too, tug? Good for you! And here I thought you just recently got leave from your captain to see a newborn arrive. Time sequencing gets confusing around here just being a lowly MS Club Member in the comments' galleys. Ah, well, what is time anyway when you're having fun rowing one's own oar? Why, er yeah Mark, sure it is. Well, famous enough that Mel Brooks satirized it in The Cheap Detective, in which Eileen Brennan as chanteuse Betty deBoop, leads the patrons in a night club in singing "la, la, la-la-la-la-la" over and over again, tossing in a "rose-ah" once or twice but otherwise completely avoiding the French lyrics because while everyone knows the tune, no one knows the words.

Prior to that I had written a couple hundred songs starting at age 14 which I considered throwaways. The NSAI proceeded to teach me song theory, structure, synecdoche, prosody, etc. I haven't written a good song since.

My family and friends request the pre-inculcated compositions. Now I spend the first part of my songwriting sessions drinking bourbon and trying to get back into my subcortex to tap into whatever pitiful remnant of natural talent lies buried there.

So interesting. My late father had an 8-track tape of Roy Clark ballads in the s. Give me a few drinks and an opening phrase, and I can sing them all: the curse of a great verbal memory.

My current earworm having just gone through Hurricane Florence is, "Turn around, don't drown. Your car is not a boat! This is just a lovely tribute. You note that they made an odd couple, the Armenian Frenchman and the South African Jewish Londoner, but perhaps not so odd after all.

I was just reading that his family had a very longstanding affinity with Jews from his childhood and that his family saved Jews in Paris while it was under Nazi occupation.

Yesterday, When I Was Young (Roy Clark Cover)

There's a great piece in The Forward about his "secret" Jewish history. Actually, when I think about it his extreme philosemitism is another thing he had in common with Frank Sinatra. He also wrote the first popular song about homosexuality in France in Manuel was singing the song "She", sitting on the bed in his room, accompanying himself on guitar, in "Basil the Rat", the last episode of the series. Am I the first to reply? Did I get it right? If so, how many bonus points do I get? Can the points be redeemed towards valuable prizes? If not I'll just write myself up a certificate and have it framed.

Another great Steyn obit for a genuinely interesting man. When was a kid and went into record stores they always had in those days an "International" section and there was always a selection of platters by Aznavour. I always wondered who the guy was as I rummaged for the Beatles and the Association and who would buy records by a singer with a name like that?

There are many errors in the E Book version, plus layout is not consistent, so lacking in proofreading.

This book was published shortly before Josie's death. Perhaps the book was not finished or there was going to be a second book, and that is why the book ends abruptly?? The story is an easy read and Josie certainly had a colourful life. I did meet Josie later in her life and she certainly kept people enthralled with her anecdotes. RIP A rather disjointed story and sadly the book ends abruptly. RIP Josie. Aguirre rated it it was amazing Apr 09, Carmen added it Mar 16,
