Its long arc of coastline has some of Britain's most spectacular beaches - including Holkham and Waxham Sands - and some impossibly pretty natural harbours like Blakeney and Brancaster. Then there are the calmer waters of the Broads, and tucked into the undulating folds of Norfolk's chalk downs only the fens on the western edge of the county are flat hundreds of small, but perfectly-formed villages.

Clustered around some of our most beautiful medieval churches are flint cottages and redbrick houses with pantiled roofs. Sure, many are now holiday homes - especially in tourist honeypots like Burnham Market and elsewhere in North Norfolk's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - but the vast majority of Norfolk villages still feel like real communities. And despite the association with Alan Partridge, Norwich is a proper county town, the focus of Norfolk life on match days and shopping days. Sure it has been somewhat in decline since it was second only to London as England's richest city in the 14th and 15th centuries.

But the legacy of that enormous medieval wealth is a stunningly beautiful centre focused on a Norman castle and a cathedral on a par with Salisbury and Wells.

What's more, as Norwich City continues its relententless, unstoppable march back to the Premiership, things are about to get even better. I'll take your Jurassic Coast, over-crowded Cornish and Devonshire beaches and windswept Norfolk sands and raise you Freshwater Bay, the Needles, Compton Bay and Tennyson Downs, to name but a few of the spectacular stretches of coastline around the Isle of Wight.

Then journey round the mile coastal path, or clamber on board a boat of any shape or size for the annual round-the-island race. You'll soon see why the Isle of Wight is not about one single box-office hit but the sum of its parts.

Spend a day in the Cheviot hills and you experience the sort of soul-settling solitude that's just not possible anywhere else in England. Admittedly, it's got worse in recent years: people from outside have heard of it and started visiting or even moving there. Year by year, the blissful wild emptiness of my home is getting less empty. Good job its grand old cities and sweeping moors and Dales are large enough to soak them all up. Millions of tourists now visit the Yorkshire Dales every year. Not in Hertfordshire. In Hertfordshire you get the best of both worlds. A plethora of different tourist attractions. St Albans for one, which has more intact Tudor buildings than the capital.

Yes, Hertfordshire brought Harry Potter to life. Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire. Yes, you read that correctly. Its reputation leaves a lot to be desired, but those who imagine a world of fake tans, nail bars and brawling on the high street will just as easily find a stretch of bleakly beautiful coastline or a chocolate-box pretty timbered village. In fact a lot of the characteristics supposedly associated with Essex are much more commonly found in Kent, in my experience sorry Clive.

Colchester, with a fine Norman castle, craggy bits of Roman wall and more recently excavated Roman theatre, is the oldest recorded town in the country, first referred to by Pliny the Elder in AD The unspoilt coast is notable for marsh, mudflats and oyster beds around Mersea Island; crumbling golden cliffs at Walton-on-the-Naze and the Martello Tower defences that punctuate the windswept horizon like lonely sandcastles. Mersea Island. Then there are the landscapes in Constable Country — visit the lock at Dedham and take a punt along the River Stour on the Essex-Suffolk border.

Less well known is the picturesque Colne Valley, with its string of pretty villages and traditional steam railway. Essex people are indeed one of the county's biggest, unsung attributes. I might be biased as I grew up here, but the East-End, post-war notion of the importance of community and family has been embraced across the county. When people tell me that northerners are friendlier, I suggest that Essex is the exception. It has not opened to the public yet, but the interior, he has said, will "explore the special character and unique qualities of Essex".

It may not have the sandy beaches of the South West or the patchwork-quilt beauty of Yorkshire Dales, but alongside picture-perfect villages there are castles and cathedrals, historic towns and battlefields, grand houses, countless good pubs and craft beer trails, vineyards, Norman churches and more rambling and walking routes including a significant chunk of the South Downs Way , than you can shake a pole at.

And there are magnificent coastal panoramas everywhere you look. The most photographed, of course, is the view across the white-specked grassland and meandering river of the Cuckmere Valley to the austere chalk faces of the Seven Sisters from Seaford Head Nature Reserve. High up on the reserve on a clement late-May or June evening, ankle deep in bacon and eggs, cinquefoil and wild thyme and you may watch, in silence, as hundreds yes, hundreds of rabbits dart about the chalky grassland while the Seven Sisters turn parlour-rose pink.

So far, so Middle England? Not a chance. The Cotswolds might be full of Hunter-clad toffs getting up to no good behind closed doors but here in Sussex we embrace, nay, celebrate diversity. For some curiously eccentric local customs and potty goings-on try Burning the Clocks, pagan and Gothic Morris Dancing and the Sussex Bonfire Societies for starters. Yet, East Sussex is all of this — and then some.
