I'm working on a series of short stories about a man seeking revenge. In things you've read or written about revenge, what things have you liked most or felt most compelled by? And on the other side of the mirror, what things have annoyed you or felt dull?

What is dark romance?

I have the general idea of it but I'm putting it away for now since I'm working on another one instead. Revenge novels are good but they seem to lose their light when the revenge is done.

Unless you can do something to change it then your story is pretty much dead after the revenge is finished. You have to keep the reader invested in this revenge plot and whatever follows, and if you finish before the stories conclusion there needs to be good reason to keep the reader going beyond that resolution of vengeance. And there needs to be good reason to keep going page after page to even want to understand the premise or result of the narrative in the first place. Deep Characters with motives, Side plots, forshadowing, some elements that add to the story intrigue or mystique of the vengeance, etc.

Use your imagination here. If you manage to avoid doing the above, I find I really enjoy a good revenge story when its well paced and not just entirely about revenge.

Excessive length shouldn't be an issue for a couple of short stories, and the last one will end with the payoff and a brief amount of aftermath, so I feel confident about dodging both bullets. As far as compelling characters, that leads into a related question. What makes a protagonist in a revenge story interesting? I probably won't cover everything, just going to give you some examples of my favorites and things I like, why I like them, and what I look for in these type of characters.

More often than not, these sort of revenge driven characters are overdone and presented poorly. It takes a lot to make me enjoy someones quest especially when they're one dimentional and often in the wrong regarding their revenge. It depends a lot on the person they're seeking vengeance of. If they have past relations, use those connections to show a side of them they dont express to others. If theyre cold and bitter to others, have them dwell on past happiness or moments they shared with this person The antagonist that makes this vengeance hurt.

One of my favorite revenge pieces is City Hunter korean drama, minor spoilers incoming because the two major characters both desire to partake in revenge against the same conglomorate however because of their different approaches it results in severe confrontation between them; the ending and climax is highly rewarding, and the balance of the different situations resulting in different revenge schemes also was very intriguing. Using this as an example, I found it was impressive because it not only had us follow two "criminals" acting on revenge, but we got the PoV of the investigator working for the police, so a triangle of povs that slowly began to unravel not only what really occured through the eyes of the detective but the risk of the outcome that those seeking revenge were causing around them to those they loved and cared for.

A solid motive, solid reasons to fight for, things to protect, and stakes and risk make a great revenge piece. And of course never losing that edge of realism within your universe. You could view them as rogue 'batmen' anti-heroes targeting corrupt political figures rather than "villains". However, to the eye of the watcher because of the truth we knew, the politicians were the villains.

I rooted for those characters because of the pain they endured and for the perseverance they showed albeit in different ways regarding righting the wrongs that they had suffered. Anyway, This is probably extremely long, but I use that as an example because it conveyed, to me, everything you need to well to get your watcher to be interested in the plot.

If you want an example of a great revenge twist which deals in the seeker of revenge being in the wrong even though they always presumed they were correct as did the viewer , look no further than the Sasuke vs. Itachi revenge story. What saved him was the ensemble cast around him, and only after destroying his brother Itachi was his truth found and it devastated him. There was a key retribution moment were he sought vengeance on the one who essentially lead the whole betrayal all along and he enacted that vengeance as a retribution for his failed and wrongful vengeance on his own brother.

I felt he was ideal as a side-MC because it was clear what his path would involve Yet he was not particularly likeable , and as we the viewer learned the truth of his brothers actions That he was essentially justified in what he did so it made us grow to dislike Sasuke because we knew more than the characters did. I felt a different type of feeling here though that I hadn't felt in many other revenge stories; I pitied sasuke for wrongfully being so consumed and killing his brother who let him kill him when the truth was beyond his knowing.

I'm only giving this as an example to demonstrate an alternate revenge story that doesn't always paint the particular character as right, good, or even likeable, yet still managed to leave me feeling extremely emotional except in a different way than normal. Naruto has tons of issues god that filler but it does plot twists and character motive reveals at an exceptionally high level. Either way, those are just some suggestions and concepts.

Hope that helps. Something I personally noticed is that my favorite revenge pieces typically aren't only about revenge. Theres drama, romance, thriller aspects -- it feels like a complete package when you've managed to dot all those i's and cross t's. I'd recommend if you really want to know what makes a good revenge story, you should consume some media or novels that interest you in that field who either have a strong revenge MC narrative or an undercurrent of revenge within the narrative. Revenge can be woven into many pieces, hell I have a revenge story in my piece yet my piece's narrative isn't primarily about revenge.

There are a lot of different ways to craft a revenge story, so don't be afraid to think outside the box. People forget that the first two star wars movies appeared to be revenge plots. Luke is told early on that Darth Vader killed his father, and later he saw that Vader killed Obi Wan.

Empire strikes back appeared to have a pretty heavy revenge plot where luke would train with yoda and avenge his father. Only powerful moments become cliche, and audiences reacted so strongly to the subversion that it became a mainstay of pop culture even 37 years later. The audience really was not expecting this to be the case, they were expecting a hero's rally and the death of vader after this fight until this moment:. Can you imagine how powerful that moment would have been if it hadn't been spoiled by 30 years of pop culture?

That's a pretty good point! I saw it before I was old enough to really appreciate the story as a narrative rather than a spectacle, and watching it later, that Wham Line might as well not exist because you know what to expect from the moment you hit play. There's no impact. I disagree.

Neither film is a revenge plot. ANH is a classic hero's journey. Even after Yoda tells him that he must confront Vader eventually, Luke only finally comes face to face because Vader makes that happen. Star Wars is about rebellion against the oppressive empire. My primary beef about revenge is the bad guys not receiving enough karma. The bad guys don't just need to be defeated, but get also enough karma for previous evil done to the MC.

This bad guy murdered dozens of people, but if you kill him to stop him, you are the bad guy!! I don't find that convincing or resonant with moral truth. It's a little better if it's 'kill him versus give him to the law', but it just often ends up feeling very preachy about morality. Also dull: "You killed my wife and children! But I'm just so, so tired of women existing in a story so that their suffering can motivate a man. See Women in Refrigerators. I agree about the family angle too, and specifically avoided that, or the John Wick variant which is a little more credible.

Instead, my protagonist seeks revenge for having his dream snatched away from him right before he could fulfill it, and for the destruction of hundreds of years of knowledge. Imagine an aspiring scholar seeking admittance to the Library of Alexandria, only for raiders to burn it to the ground the moment he passes the exhaustively difficult entry exam.
