The same applies to the term "psychopath" which to many people suggests a sociopath who is simply more dangerous, like a mass murderer.

Both of these are not only inaccurate descriptions but troublesome ones. Sociopathy and psychopathy are considered to be two types of APD. While psychopaths are classified as people with little or no conscience, sociopaths do have a limited, albeit weak, ability to feel empathy and remorse. While psychopaths can and do follow social conventions when it suits their needs, sociopaths are more likely to fly off the handle and react violently whenever they're confronted by the consequences of their actions.
Willem H. Martens argues in his infamous article "The Hidden Suffering of the Psychopath" that psychopaths do at times suffer from emotional pain and loneliness. Most have lead hurt-filled lives and have an inability to trust people, but like every human being on the planet, they, too, want to be loved and accepted. However, their own behavior makes this extremely difficult, if not impossible, and most are aware of this.
Some feel saddened by the actions they are unable to control because they know it isolates them from others even more. There are some who say that "sociopaths are made and psychopaths are born," but this characterization may be too far broad. While it is true that psychopathy is believed to have genetic components perhaps caused by the underdevelopment of the parts of the brain that regulate emotion and impulsiveness , there are clearly other factors that contribute to the behavioral disorder.
Many have had parents who were substance abusers and who failed to provide parental guidance or attention. This typically translates to unstable and failed relationships in adulthood and a fixated sense that you have been "robbed" of opportunities and advantages afforded to everyone else. Sociopathy also tends to be associated with harmful childhood experiences, including sexual abuse, physical violence, or parental instability.
Can a Psychopath Learn to Feel Your Pain?
Sociopaths have a conscience, albeit a weak one, and will often justify something they know to be wrong. By contrast, psychopaths will believe that their actions are justified and feel no remorse for any harm done. This differentiation may suggest that nature plays more of a role in the creation of a psychopath than a sociopath. This is supported in part by a review of studies in which as many as a third of people diagnosed with sociopathy essentially "give up" their antisocial behavior in later life and development well-adjusted relationships.
While it's common to think of sociopaths and psychopaths as being inherently dangerous, this is more a construct of a TV drama than a true reflection of the disorder. Violence, while certainly possible, is not an inherent characteristic of either sociopathy or psychopathy. When psychopaths do become violent, as in the case of Jeffrey Dahmer, they're just as likely to hurt themselves as others.

Psychopaths are extraordinarily manipulative. In personal relationships, a psychopath will gather all kinds of information about you, only to use it against you later. In fact, their charm is a hallmark characteristic. Having read you well and knowing your weaknesses and vulnerabilities, a psychopath may not immediately act on this information. Someone who has had close interaction with a psychopath for a period of time eventually finds out that this person has been using them all along.
In intimate relationships, a psychopath is adroit at telling his or her partner exactly what the other wants to hear.
The loved ones and family members of some psychopathic killers often claim that they never saw any indications of evil, as difficult as that is to believe. A conscience implies a sense of morality, whereas a psychopath has none. Someone who lacks a conscience can readily behave in unconscionable ways, and psychopaths plot and device scenarios where they carry out their heinous acts with a fervor and glee that normal human beings cannot begin to fathom. Psychopaths are emotionally unresponsive to the crimes they commit. Much research on the emotional ability of psychopaths had postulated that someone with this diagnosable psychiatric disorder was incapable of fear.
More recent research , however, found that psychopaths may feel fear, even though they have trouble in automatic detecting and responding to fear. The history of psychopaths is littered with inconsistent work stints.
What makes a person a psychopath?
They rarely stay at a single job very long. Look carefully at the eyes of the notorious serial killers like Bundy, Gacy and others. Caught on video and in photographs, the images reveal a chilling aspect of every psychopath: dead, flat, lifeless eyes.

This, despite being externally cheerful, charming, upbeat and positive. Another common trait is that psychopaths routinely speak in a monotone voice. As editor J. Reid Maloy writes in The Mark of Cain: Psychoanalytic Insight and the Psychopath , psychopaths display emotional detachment, severe narcissistic psychopathology, and minimal anxiety. They will, however, respond to displays of extreme anger and fear, because they can exploit those emotions, not that they ever feel bad about causing them.

No matter their upbringing, whether it was disadvantaged or privileged, psychopaths go through life feeling entitled. Every word, as well as thought and action that comes from them stems from this feeling of entitlement. As such, psychopaths are extraordinarily arrogant.
Following the rules or obeying the laws of society is not something a psychopath pays any heed to. They have a history of blatantly flaunting the rules, often deliberately doing something illegal just for the thrill of it, to get away with it, to show how superior they are from the rest of society.
