The Art Show was not the best financially, but better not to dwell on that. And she was given a bonafide furry name by the end of the con Elmom, a reference to my old handle, Elrond , which I think was the stone that weighted the scales in favor of a return visit next year so YAY!

Earl Palmer

It was funny coming back to it without the furries, but with genre fans instead. It was also a little odd going from AnthroCon, where a good portion of my table sales are in commissions, to WorldCon, where almost none of them were. But they had fun projects and were happy when I had finished, so I shall keep offering commissions at genre cons. But I had WoMo by my side again, and so I was kept nourished and encouraged for the whole show, which was five days so it was a very good thing she was there indeed.

Well, four days. But it was a good four days! I was even able to develop a nice little routine involving Pilates in the Hilton gym nowhere near as comprehensive as the Westin DLCC, sadly , breakfast in the room and then an easy stroll over to Hall 3. It made the con extra special. I am unreasonably proud of myself for managing to get ahead of her just this once. WoMo and I had a long, but ultimately smooth drive back to Oregon, and even got to make a pitstop in Davis for a quick lunch with my Partners, which was an unexpected bonus. We then filled the remaining seven hours with a lot of talking about future projects and game planning for the months ahead.

It has already been decided that we will not be attending Dublin next year, and instead taking the time to focus on publishing whatever projects I have current at that time. What else? I think it would be interesting to go around specifically asking writers what they thought of DWJ, what her influence has been on them, and how she inspires them. I think it would be interesting to see how many have been consciously or unconsciously influenced by her writing.

Diana Wynne Jones is not a mainstream favorite. There is a sharpness to her work, a raw, unfettered, wild, unpredictability that is honed by the powerful trueness that drives them and which makes them just a little too scary for mainstream.

Sometimes it scares me, even though I have grown up as a human and as a writer with Jamie and Helen and Vierran and Mordion and Scales and Blade and Cat and what Gwendolyn did to him never mind Howl. Sometimes I think that all my writing is just me processing the great eruption of inspiration I derived from reading her books as a teenager, and sometimes I still find hot spots.

Increasingly I think I am not alone in this, and that it may be even harder for writers who discovered her after they grew up as humans. And we know that she is frightening and good. So there are my thoughts. Of course the problem is that the magic of Diana Wynne Jones is too big and four dimensional to be squashed down into a glib little phrase. But if a funny ribbon can get more people reading her, all the better, I say.

A quick gander through my online gallery shows a shocking absence! I went through a number of concepts before settling on this one.

Friends, it is nomination season. So, without further adieu, here are my works of fiction published in , and the categories into which they fall for the award season. Note: category delineations were taken from the Hugo Awards info page. If you want to, of course. AnthroCon was there at the turn of the month, and as always it was a wild, exhilarating ride. So many good feelings, so good to see old friends again and kindle new ones. I missed Susan, who wisely stayed in the Netherlands this year and thus avoided the harrowing trip through US customs, but my partner in fundraising, Shujin, dropped in and was an immense help on Saturday and Sunday.

Shujin and I debuted a quirky live-sketch show part iron artist, part charity auction. Shujin is a DJ and we took prompts from the audience, combined with his choice of song, and I drew them. The results were… as irreverent as one might expect. Commissions were somewhat lighter than in past years, but those I got were lovely, and sales were good.

I under-ordered Professor Odd Season 2 singles, and sold out of Driving Arcana Rotation 1, but I had enough of Season One—though all but one copy has been spoken for now. Hit me up! I will make a proper art post later with the whole thing. I missed my partners, who were unable to make it this year due to Boyfriend moving from TX to CA to live with Girlfriend, which necessitated a quick trip down to visit them on my behalf directly after the con.

This, combined with the mountain biking camp for girls which I volunteered at last week put on by Soul Sister Cycling and I am now woefully behind on summer business. Which business has been compacted by our upcoming trip to Helsinki for WorldCon next month. What ho! Time to get off the blog and back to work!

About the show

Wish me luck. Also I have several new pieces of art to share. Expect a bunch of art posts in the coming week.

And by expect I mean nag me about it on Twitter so I actually do it. What a month. But in the tradition of artists in times of crisis, and I am going to keep on doggedly doing what I do, as hard and as best that I can. Looking forward to next month tomorrow—eep!

One of the great things about being a sort-of career insider is getting my hands on stories that fall way outside the mainstream and are written as a labor of love, as opposed to filling the ledgers of some publishing company bean counter.
