In their accounts of the security aspects of the Profumo affair, Anthony Summers and Stephen Dorril provide extra information concerning Ward's last hours, his movements and his visitors. They also quote from an interview with "a former MI6 operative", who asserted that Ward had been murdered by an agent working on behalf of MI6. The main motive for the killing was Ward's ability to embarrass the government and the Royal family. The method, apparently, was to encourage Ward to continue to take barbiturates until a fatal dose had been ingested.
The reporter Tom Mangold , one of the last to see Ward alive, dismisses the murder theory, while allowing that there are unexplained circumstances relating to Ward's death. The government appointed Lord Denning , the Master of the Rolls , to investigate the various rumours that had emanated from and around the Profumo affair. Denning's report, published on 26 September , [52] concluded that there had been no security leaks [53] nor evidence to link members of the government with associated scandals.
The Profumo affair had damaged Harold Macmillan 's government; Macmillan resigned as prime minister in October , citing health reasons. Ward's role on behalf of MI5 was confirmed in , when the Sunday Times located his former contact, "Woods". Many commentators share Davenport-Hines's view that Ward was a scapegoat and that his trial was an "historical injustice". Above all, the judge failed to disclose Keeler's perjury at an earlier trial, which made her a tainted witness.

As an elder Mr Ward worked for many years in a battle to have the rights of his people in the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve recognised. It was noticed by the Prison transport contractors G4S driving the vehicle that Ward was unconscious.
He died shortly afterwards. The mode of transport used in Ward's death had already been warned about prior to his death. Ward's death was the subject of a coronial inquest. Compensation for his family after his death was delayed, and involved a number of government authorities [18] [19] [20] [21] The delays caused significant loss of confidence in both the government and its capacity to have safe delivery of prison transport in isolated areas of Western Australia.
