My learning has come through trying things and failing and through experiences that taught me what works and what doesn't work. Here are five life lessons we can only learn one way: the hard way. How many of these tough lessons has life taught you so far? I was way too impressed with and cowed by people with fancy job titles and big houses and cars for a long time. As a kid I babysat for wealthy people and I noticed that having money didn't make people smart, mature or nice.

As a baby business person I wondered how certain lofty executives had gotten to their positions because I could see that they were untrustworthy schemers, but I figured there were aspects to the business world I just didn't understand. I didn't see that some leaders need to surround themselves with yes-men and -women in order to be protected from reality.

That's how the untrustworthy schemers got ahead. They had to pay a heavy price for their favored status, which was always at risk: They had to become exactly the person their fearful boss wanted them to be, and speak with that person's voice instead of their own.

Over time I learned to trust people based on how my gut responded to them. They say you can trust people more or less based on your dog's reaction to each person, and your body is as sharp as your dog's instincts are -- if only you can listen to it. That's some of the toughest learning you can get -- but also some of the most valuable!

Nearly every working person has donated trillions of brain and heart cells and hundreds of hours to the wrong cause. You trusted your employer to keep you on the payroll and you gave up too much of your time, energy and wisdom to people who didn't value you as much as you thought they did.

My body was screaming for some rest only to hear "I need to succeed, got no time for sleep.
