After Farquhar escapes the soldier he begin running, trying to escape them before they find him. Eventually, reaching reaching large closed gate which seems to be the entrance to his plantation. The gates open for Farquhar as he walks closer to the entrance, further implying the possibility the Farquhar is in fact dead. As he reaches his house he sees his wife in the distance.

Their eyes meet and Farquhar starts running towards her with open arms. The birds chirping along with the other faint noises we hear in the movie suddenly appear to be the sounds a dying man was hearing as he was being executed by the hemp.
The film adaptation allowed Robert Enrico to create a much more symbolic story that by nature allows the director to create a stronger ambiguity and symbolism than the written word could alone. The use of cinematic technique to create a more effective and ambiguous story that forces us to wonder if what is occurring is real or not by creating a strong lack of disparity. Critics such as James Palmer claim the story is successful as an independent work of art but should be considered a loose adaptation rather than an independent piece of art Palmer 1.
The film is able to create more tension and expand on the ambiguity present in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
