There are probably only three other sounds that make me feel more nostalgic: hippos grunting, the emerald spotted wood dove call, and the cry of a fish eagle. It's a good thing I'm not writing the history books. My mother corrected my story: "We were on our way back from Mozamique and decided to camp at Mkuze game reserve.

The truth about spotted hyenas

We had the Heeg's trailer that folded out into a tent. Gran and Granddad who had been staying in hotels or chalets in Moz slept in it with you and Dad and I slept outside. Quite an adventure for the grandfolks as it was a long time since they had camped!

When they reached the misty mountain top, the hare showed her companion a hole in the rocks, covered with a stone. The hyena rolled the stone away and his eyes lit up at the sight of so many chunks of sweet meat. Greedily, he gulped down the meat till nothing was left.

After letting out a big burp, the hyena turned and leapt at the hare with open jaws - but she was ready for him and ran away. Later on, the hyena found the body of a large buffalo and ate till his swollen belly could hold more. The hyena soon became bloated from not being able to go to the toilet, and drinking water only made it much worse. The other hyenas were far too clumsy to remove the stitches. He lay beneath a tree by the water hole, feeling like he would burst and die. Eventually, a vulture landed to drink. The hyena pleaded with the vulture, as a brother scavenger, to remove the stitching in his bottom, telling him all about how the wicked hare had led him up the mountain and played a terrible trick on him.

The hyena swore to honour the agreement, so the vulture moved round to his bottom. The hyena gave out a great gasp of relief but refused to help the vulture get out of the mound of poop. As the hyena wandered off to find some food, the vulture swore to get revenge on him. Eager for more sweet meat, the hyena travelled back up the mountain, but found the hole empty and left scratching his head. The Hyena gave the soup to the Lion, and the pot was very hot when the Lion went to take it in his hands.

Then he dropped the pot over the Lion's head, and the soup burned the Lion's eyes and the inside of his mouth. The Hyena took up a stick and beat the Lion, and he died, swallowing the hot soup and being beaten, while his head was inside the pot. In African and Persian folklore, there are stories of a hyena-man hybrid, much like werewolves in Europe. The Bouda is a mythical tribe that is supposed to have the ability to transform into hyenas.

The ancient Kingdom of Kaffa had a similar were-hyena known as the qora. Belief in were-hyenas is so entrenched in the Bornu people of Nigeria that their language contains a specific word, bultungin, which translates as 'I change myself into a hyena. Many African tribes, such as the Himba, also perceive the hyena as a hermaphrodite, just as Europeans saw it as able to change sex. When Europeans first encountered hyenas they formed all sorts of misunderstandings about them.

  • As far back as the ancient Greeks, it was believed that hyenas could change their sex. This is probably because the two sexes look virtually identical, and the genitalia of the female spotted hyena looks very masculine. Europeans associated hyenas with perversions, especially homosexuality. It was believed male hyenas had sex with one another.

    African Folk Tales (Andrew Lang)

During medieval times, Europeans believed that a lion would mate with a hyena and produce a leucrotta. The leucrotta had a beguiling human voice and would lure travelers to their deaths. Pliny claimed that the leucrotta was the offspring of a lion and crocotta, a mythical dog-wolf. The crocotta was a combination of dog and wolf with impossibly strong teeth and instant digestion. It was said the crocotta could lure dogs and men to their death by imitating the voice of a man. A crocotta could change its color or gender at will. Sounds like a hyena, doesn't it? One story goes that hyenas were born after the Flood as in Noah from the unnatural union of a dog and a cat.

The story about St. Macarius comes from an early Coptic text.
