He had to evolved throughout the book to adapt to the situations he was put in after the accident. The situations made him think less of himself and more about Cindy and her survival. He understood that he was the reason that the accident took place, so he took things very seriously when solving them. Cindy was also a main character in the book. She evolved through the book by not being so stubborn and putting up with Tonys actions. She was not as offended by him once she got to know him better.

Setting The setting of the book takes place in New York. This is important, because that is where all of the traveling and action takes place. Another important setting in the book is the car. That is where they had to survive for two days before going and looking for help. The book takes place in present time in the month of February. The month affects the story, because the big blizzard occurred in February. Thematic Relations The main theme in the book was appearance vs.

Tony was a know it all kid who had always gotten what he wanted. When he embarked on the trip to his uncle's house he thought it was going to be a nice easy ride with no worries. Once the snow started to fly and the traffic slowed down, he figured taking the back roads would be easier and faster with less hassle to go through.

It was just the opposite. The road was covered in snow, and he could not see or tell where the road was. The backroads appeared to be the best option but in reality they were the worst option. Recommendations I would recommend this book to any middle schooler or older. The reading level is appropriate, so they can comprehend what is going on easily. I also recommend this to either boy or girl, because I think both will be able to relate with the fact of survival.

There are both boys and girls in the book, so they could relate to the characters. I would rate this a four out of five stars. Apr 07, John Jorgensen rated it liked it. The rest of the story tells how they survive in the wilderness and eventually make it back to civilization. After Tony breaks his leg, both him and Cindy wonder how they are ever going to get saved. When Tony was searching for help and rescue, he found a hunting shack that was not inhabited. In the cupboards, he fo Plot: In the cupboards, he found cans of beans and some fruit.

Tony is a young kid about 15 years old who is ignorant to what his parents tell him. He is cocky and a smart allic. She is kind of quiet, and not the most outgoing person in the world. The setting is on the border of Canada. In order for it to be snowy and have a blizzard, it had to take place in a location where it would snow. All of the clues of the date are the prices of items and especially the car.

If it would have been later than that, the prices of everything would be higher. It has a lot of connection to people who understand the wilderness and can understand the actual fear of Cindy and Tony. Mar 06, Zach Volz rated it it was amazing. I really like this book. The book is about how a boy named Tony finds a dog and wants to keep it.

His parents let the dog loose in the middle of the night, because it kept barking and waking up the neighbors. Once Tony found out he went out looking for the dog. On the way it started to snow heavily, and he came across a hitchhiker named Cindy. Before they knew it they realized that I really like this book. Before they knew it they realized that they were completely lost. Tony lost control of the car and they ended up in a field stuck.

The rest of the book told about how they survived together and the things they had to go through in order to stay alive. I would recommend this book to middle school or high school students, because it does use some vulgar language in the story. Dec 05, Cole rated it liked it. I actually think that it would make a great movie. I enjoyed reading this book because the story kept moving along, it never stood still. I thought the characters were easy to relate to. I would recommend this book to any one looking for a good read and is a high school student or any age above.

Again, very good book to read and would recomend. Dec 30, Kim Kuhne rated it really liked it Shelves: I re-read this in part because of the huge amount of snow that has fallen this week on the Tug Hill Plateau, setting of the book. I've cross-country skied on some of the roads and trails in this area and know how easy it is to get twisted and turned around.

The roads are not plowed in the winter. It would be easy for someone not familiar with driving in the area to pull onto one of the roads at the start of a storm and think that a plow would eventually come around. Everything in the book is possible. Dec 02, Amy rated it liked it. This was my favorite book in late elementary school or middle school growing up.

When I found a copy to read again I got really excited. I wanted to see if I still liked it and how much I remembered. Turns out I remembered a lot. Today I love books about survival and extremes Snow Bound is about two teenagers who get lost in a snow storm and work to survive. Nov 20, Hayley rated it it was amazing. This book was so good! Its one of those amazing finds you just happen to stumble upon. Its a great survival story. Defiantly a "story of raw survival" that the author, Harry Mazer, was able to write beautifully. Aug 05, Cynthia rated it liked it. Ok book on survival for teens.

The main male character is quite selfish. Jun 18, Steven Bartley rated it really liked it. The writing and character development were good, but the story was a bit too outlandish for me. The premise was what drew me in and the plot line was interesting, but the direction of the book was out of control and I almost quit reading it.

The two kids, a young teenage boy who hates his family, and a teenage girl is pretty much on her own in life. To be honest, I read this book because it was short, and it seemed like a good adventure book. This book ended up being a very interesting novel, as the teenagers had to overcome not only the physical weakness, but they had to work together. After his parents kicking his dog out of his house, Tony gets really mad at his parents so he steals his moms car, and drives it around trying to find his dog, and go to his uncles house to live with him.

He is way too young to be driving, but he does it anyways. Along the way he picks up a hitchhiker, Cindy. Unfortunately for them, they were driving right into the largest storm of the year, without knowing it. They were cold, hungry, and scared for more than a week. The ending of this book was very dramatic and bold. They eventually made it to safety but they did not find it easily. They got in many arguments regarding which way to go, and eventually split up, however they both knew it was the wrong decision. After Tony almost got eaten by the dogs, they met back up and found safety.

My favorite part was when Tony was yelling for help and Cindy used all of her energy to get back to help him. I liked this part because it showed true sympathy from Cindy, after all of the times she said she hated him and that she was weighing him down. I think that this book is much like any other action adventure book, and if you at all enjoy adventure you should read it. It is a very simple, short read and it is easy to understand. The theme of never leaving anyone behind is a great message that everyone should have. Overall I enjoyed this book, Feb 08, Anthony Mitchell rated it liked it Shelves: This book is the story of a fifteen year old spoiled kid named Tony Laporte who rebels against his parents for not letting him keep a stray dog, by running away and taken his mother's old car.

After picking up a young hitchhiker named Cindy Reichert, the two misguided youths become stranded on a lonely highway after Tony wrecks the car. Now the main characters of the story are stranded in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter. I felt more empathy for Cindy than Tony when t Summary: I felt more empathy for Cindy than Tony when they both became stranded after the car crashed.

Tony was just reacting like a spoiled brat ,when he took his mom's car in deviance of his parents not letting him keep a stray dog. Cindy on the other hand was tired of waiting for a bus to come and afraid of being ridiculed by her classmates, thus i felt sorry for her becoming stranded after Tony crashed the car. Tony got what he deserved in my opinion. On page 40,Cindy promised herself that once she and Tony got someplace civilized that she would call her Dad to come and get her,and not attempt hitching again. At no point in this story did i feel sorry for Tony.

I would have the students point out examples of the book that qualified this story as historical fiction. They would have to find examples that the author gave which made reference to the time period of the story. For example , on page 13 the author points out that the Laporte family was the first family on Bridge street that with a color television set, and how Tony's mother was watching Lucille Ball on t.

One of the main characters Tony was upset because his parents would not let him keep a stray dog. He had been use to getting what he always wanted and could not deal with their refusal to keep the dog around.

He stopped to pick up a hitchhiker who was all bundled up and he thought was a boy. To his surprise it was a girl named Cindy. He only intended to drive a short distance and drop her off. However, the weather changed fiercely as they drove through the night. Tony had no license and little driving experience and drove too fast and ended up getting lost. He took wrong turns due to the white out of the now blizzard. He wrecked the car and the two of them began arguing about whose fault it was getting lost.

But soon they realized that they had to work together to get through this alive. The book appealed to me because it showed how two strangers who didn't like each other much, could still get through tough times. They are trying to survive in this storm for nearly eleven days with little food, only snacks and no heat. They are unsure if they will ever be rescued.

If you would like to read a book on how unprepared people found ways to survive, then you would enjoy this book to see if they survived long enough to be rescued or not. Apr 03, Anthony Mitchell rated it really liked it. This was a good story of a 15 year old runaway named Tony Laporte ,and his adventure with a hitchiker named Cindy. The chance meeting of the two precedes a series of events in which the two become trapped in the woods in the dead of winter, after Tony crashes the car on an isolated highway.

The Lexile measure of this book is L,which means students from 4th to 6th grade, with typical reader measures should be able to read this book with little or no assistance from a peer with a higher reading comprehension, or an adult. A typical 4th grader is suppose to have Lexile measures ranging from L to L. There is a family on page 13, who is described as being the first on the block to own a color television, and reference to the Lucile Ball shown dancing on the tv screen. Also mention of a late-model Ford wagon and a Plymouth car driven by Tony's mother. Nov 27, Sherri rated it liked it. Realistic Fiction, Survival Rating: Although it is simplistic in nature, the author, Harry Mazer, shows the importance of cooperation in order to survive. It also shows how the main characters must figure out their own strengths and personal weaknesses. Tony tries to impress Cindy by showing off his driving skills and ends up wrecking the car in the middle of nowhere. Tony Laporte — Tony is 15 years old and very spoiled. Harry Mazer is the author of many books for young readers, and his books have won numerous awards. Mar 15, Anneke Simonsen added it. Snow Bound written by Harry Mazer has many different characters with cool personalities that make the story better and fun to read. I picked this book because I needed a new book to read and this one looked interesting and short. The story was about a boy named Tony who was very spoiled and got whatever he wanted, one day he brought home a stray dog that he wanted to keep but his parents said no and sent the dog back out into the cold snow.

Tony tries to impress Cindy with his driving skills but ends up crashing the car.

Cindy and Tony start to argue because not only are the stuck but there stuck in the middle of a snowstorm, they go through a lot to find a way out and eventually after they had ran out of food water, have frozen and hurt they found a house and went to the hospital after where there parents came and found them. The ending for this story was very dramatic Tomy broke his ankle they ran out of food and water, and were ready to die from the coldness. When they found the house I wasn't really surprised, I kinda saw it coming but it was a very good ending anyways.

I definitely recommend this book if you like surprises and action also there is a lot of drama in this book so if you're in to drama this is the book for you. This is similar to any book where someone is lost in tough situations.

Finally Tony makes a terribly wrong turn and lands them in the middle of no where in the middle of a blizzard. Now they must work together in order to survive and escape. I thought this book was okay. It took me while to get into the story and really like the characters. Some parts were boring and there wasn't much action or adventure like I thought there could be. Overall I don't think I would recommend it to many people or read it again. Jul 15, Rachel Parker rated it it was ok Shelves: Jan 15, Jett Blocker added it. On his way driving through a snow storm he finds a girl named Cindy hitchhiking.

Tony gets lost in the storm and finds himself going out of control and crashing in the snowy wilderness with very few food and warmth. As the storm cleared up a bit Tony heads out to find people, leaving Cindy behind.

Tony finds a stream that lead to an abandon shack with a good supplies of food. He heads back to Cindy who was really weak. They decide to head out together to find the shack. First off, I love survival stories. But this book was just, well, kind of bad. Maybe it's because it was only his 2nd book, and he really improved in the 8 years before he wrote my childhood fave. Very rarely is there a MC that I just so thoroughly dislike, and that I can't find at least one redeeming quality. Tony is a butthead. He was selfish and obnoxiou This book was such a disappointment.

He was selfish and obnoxious, and that never really changed. And the fact that Cindy wanted to keep in touch with him and the end? Wow, that girl has some serious self-esteem issues.
