A few miles south, Fort Kearney State Historical Park preserves the wooden stockades built to protect the growing trail traffic. In Gothenburg, visitors can duck inside a Pony Express Station , moved here from its nearby trail location. Return to Grand Island on NE-2 for an unexpected treat, the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway , which cuts through rolling dunes capped with native prairie grasses—a landscape largely unchanged since pioneer days.

Today, the 2,mile route that once linked the Spanish outpost of Santa Fe with the rich California frontier is a treat rather than travail.
